Aussie’s Transition Into Renewable Energy Age

Due to our previous post on Darwin’s Blackout, let’s take a look at some of the recent developments of Renewable Energy policies in Australia.

Back in 2006, about 9,500 GWh (gigawatt-hours) of Australian electricity came from renewable sources, representing less than 4% of  nationally generated electricity. By 2011, that number moved up to approximately 29,302 GWh and to 29,678 GWh by 2012, representing 13.14% of the total production in Australia.

Similar to many other countries, government policy in response to concern for climate change, energy independence, and economic stimulus has been the driving force behind encouraging the development of renewable energy. A key policy that has been in place since 2001 to encourage large-scale renewable energy development is a mandatory renewable energy target (MRET), which in 2010 was increased to 41,000 GWh of renewable generation from power stations. There is also the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme, an uncapped scheme to support rooftop solar power and solar hot water and several State schemes providing feed-in tariffs to encourage photovoltaics. In 2012, these policies have been supplemented by a carbon price and a 10 billion-dollar fund to finance renewable energy projects.

Based on a survey result indicated in Angus Reid Global Monitor (June 25, 2007), there is/was considerable public support for the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency in Australia.

It has also been suggested that with sufficient public and private sector investment and government policy certainty, Australia could switch entirely to renewable energy within a decade by building additional large-scale solar and wind power developments, upgrading to transmission infrastructure and introduction of appropriate energy efficiency measures.

The amount of installed PV capacity in Australia has increased 10-fold between 2009 and 2011. Feed-in-tariffs and mandatory renewable energy targets specifically designed to assist renewable energy commercialization in Australia have largely been responsible for the rapid increase.  In South Australia, Premier Mike Rann introduced a solar feed in tariff for households and an educational program that involved installing photovoltaics on the roofs of major public buildings such as the Adelaide Airport, State Parliament, Museum, Art Gallery and several hundred public schools. In 2008 Premier Rann announced funding for $8 million worth of solar panels on the roof of the new Goyder Pavilion at the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds, the largest roof top solar installation in Australia, qualifying it for official “power station” status. South Australia has the highest per capita take up of household solar power in Australia. The first commercial-scale PV power plant was opened in 2011, the Uterne Solar Power Station, a 1MW capacity grid-connected solar photovoltaic system located 5 km south of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. The second opened in 2012 at Greenough River Solar Farm with a capacity of 10 MW. The price of photovoltaics has been decreasing, and in January of 2013, was less than half the cost of using grid electricity in Australia.

SOLAR SPIRIT 3 of TAFE South Australia Is Wonderfully Comfortable !

This is an interview with a team member David of TAFE SA Solar Spirit team of TAFE South Australia University at World Solar Challenge 2013 at Hindmarsh Square of Adelaide, Australia. SOLAR SPIRIT 3 is an extremely comfortable car to be sitting in. I can now attest to that fact. Below is the interview conducted inside SOLAR SPIRT 3 of TAFE SA:

Building solar car is part of the curriculum for students at TAFE South Australia University. Students at TAFE should be proud of what they have accomplished and be thankful for this opportunity to advance their skills in green technology of solar car building as I am thankful for being able to sit in this wonderfully comfortable vehicle to conduct this interview.

Here is the final results you’ve all been waiting for, regarding World Solar Challenge 2013 (official release from World Solar Challenge 2013):

The Dutch have dominated this year’s 2013 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. Having already won the elite Challenger Class title when team NUNA7 of Nuon Solar Team

made it two from two winning the Cruiser Class category announced tonight at the Awards Ceremony in Adelaide.  With a score of 97.5% to Eindhoven it was perhaps closer than the Dutch had predicted, with Germany’s Hochschule Bochum team

a close second on 93.9%, in turn just beating Australia’s UNSW Sunswift team who scored 92.3% in

third place.  The Cruiser class was judged on the key criteria of solar kilometres travelled; passenger kilometres; speed; energy efficiency; and a subjective element of design and practicality.  Of the eight Cruisers built especially for the Australian event, four completed the 3020 kilometres on full solar power, the University of Minnesota from the USA

joining the ranks with the Dutch, German and Australian teams, taking out fourth place with 79.2%.  Each of the top teams had differing strategic approaches to the contest. Eindhoven being a four seater car easily accounted for the most passenger kilometres; Bochum were the most energy efficient, and UNSW Sunswift were the fastest to the finish line.  Final judging occurred on Saturday afternoon with the expert panel assessing characteristics such as: ease of access; comfort; controls; features; style; ease of charging, overall desirability; road registration; parking and cargo space. Judges put the cars through their paces on the finish line. Teams were tested for their parking skills, their ability to load the trunk with numerous suitcases and the ultimate cargo test – could the Aussie esky also be stowed the right way up in the trunk?  The judging panel spent hours deliberating final scores with the topl three cruisers all shining in their own right. Team Bochum’s Powercore Suncruiser scored high on accessibility and desirability and Sunswift’s ‘EVE’ was the most stylish. In the end it came down to just five points between the three top teams with the world’s first four seater solar family car , ‘STELLA’ taking the honours.  The remaining four cruisers completed the Challenge with a combination of solar kilometres and trailer kilometres: Goko High School from Japan (2288 km);

Event Director Chris Selwood said that after more than 3,000 kilometres it was perhaps fitting, in a category that was intended to bridge the gap between high-end technology and driving practicality, that the results would come down to practical design and the ability to appeal to every day drivers.

“I congratulate Team Eindhoven on their innovation, practical design, and foresight, to think outside the square and add the extra seats. ‘STELLA‘ is a wonderful solar car in a field of exceptional cars and teams. I look forward to 2015 and the prospect of more cruisers as we work toward the world’s most efficient electric car,” Chris said.

began, having gotten their solar cars to Darwin only to be faced with the reality of not being able to compete. For others the strong wind gusts, dust storms, rolling spinifex and sheer distance proved too much.  Regardless of their placing, all teams had reason to celebrate their achievements and were given a rousing reception and their moment in the sun on the official finish line at Hindmarsh Square in Adelaide.  In the Challenger class, Onda Solare from Italy in their solar car Emilia 3,

made the 3020 kilometres under solar power for the first time crossing the finish line at 4.25 pm on Friday putting them into the top ten. In the Adventure Class, Team Antakari from Chile also made the distance under

full solar power crossing at 9.31am Saturday morning which put them in second place in their class.  With 22 countries competing in Australia for the event, the Challenge welcomed first timers: China, Sweden, Indonesia, and Colombia.

China’s entrant from the Beijing Institute of Technology, Sun Shuttle, was welcomed into Adelaide today, having recorded 1398 solar kilometres. Colombia’s Universidad EAFIT Empress Publicas de Medelin, in their solar car Primavera, recorded 2505 solar kilometres; The Jonkoping University team from Sweden in their solar car, Natural Magic Energy, struck difficulties in the windy conditions, despite their damaged car they managed to record 1301 solar kilometres; and the team from Indonesia’s Intitut Teknologi Sepuluh Surabaya in their solar car Sapu Angin Surya drove 748 kilometres under solar power.  Event Director Chris Selwood congratulated all the teams saying the spirit of competition is just as important as the result.  “This is a truly unique event that brings people from diverse backgrounds and cultures together across the Australian outback. I look forward to our final day tomorrow, with our first ever street parade from 2pm followed by the Awards Ceremony and the announcement of the inaugural Cruiser Class winner,” he said.

For Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, activities at Hindmarsh Square will include:

  1. 38 solar car teams from 22 countries
  2. Hire a free Adelaide City Bike
  3. Adelaide Clean Drive – free test drive – some of the latest lowest emission production cars through the city streets
  4. Feast on Fork on the Road, from 12noon Sunday
  5. The world’s first solar car street parade, from 2pm Sunday starting in Hindmarsh Square and travelling through the city streets to Edwards park.

Necessary Supports For World Solar Challenge 2013

Solar enthusiasts come from all walks of life, irrespective of their ethnicity, national of origin, gender, socio-economic background. What they do have in common is the hope, optimism, and energy derived from the belief that Solar Energy is the Cleanest-Safest-Healthiest-Most Secure form of energy available to us Earthlings. At the World Solar Challenge 2013 (about 3000 km between Darwin and Adelaide of Australia), solar cars from 38-40 teams are driven and competed by students from 22 countries. But, keep in mind that behind these dazzling, futuristic looking solar cars, there are many solar enthusiasts supporting the completion of each and every solar car project.  Once every two years, I come to Darwin to soak up the happy energy from these wonderful fellow solar enthusiasts and gather their unique stories, shared below:

1. On the first day that I arrived in Darwin, at the Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex, I’ve come across Mr. Shusei Yamada.

Mr. Yamada supports World Solar Challenge 2013 by being one of the drivers for KAITON II of  GoKo High School.

Besides his involvement with World Solar Challenge, Mr. Yamada also seeks adventure in another kind of renewable energy (besides solar). Apparently, he established the Biodiesel Adventure Project to support an attempt to drive around the world without using fossil fuels, in a car powered by biodiesel fuel. On December 1, 2008, Mr. Yamada completed his journey around the world in 360 days, totaled  47,853 km, on 6504 liters of cooking oil (supplied by 2496 individuals). 2. While waiting at the Darwin airport for the flight to Adelaide, Australia, I met an adorable Dutch couple, also waiting to get to Adelaide. As it turned out, they are Marycke and Gerard Seder

After finding out that Gerard teaches math and physics and Marycke enjoys taking beautiful photos, I couldn’t help encouraging them to consider  building a web site of their own, relating subject matters in math and physics with beautiful photos.  Perhaps this lovely couple will collaborate on such project together in the future.  Just remember that Blogger and WordPress have all made it very user-friendly for people to start sharing information online and Google is your friend. Any question one may have regarding how to get something done, just ask Google.

3.  Last but not least of this post is Wubbo Ockels.

I can’t believe it! I met the  Dutch physicist,  former astronaut of European Space Agency (ESA), and the first Dutch citizen in space, Wubbo Johannes Ockels! All I saw is some one in the orange Nuon Solar Team’s support crew shirt, with an unassuming manner, and a big happy kid not much different from rest of the students on the solar team from the Netherlands,

full of energy and enthusiasm for life and solar energy.  Dr. Ockels is currently professor of Aerospace for Sustainable Engineering and Technology at the Delft University of Technology.  From the long list of accomplishments of Dr. Ockels, I simply want to highlight two projects associated with energy:

  • First project is Laddermill. A Laddermill is a kind of windmill consisting of ladder of kites as quoted from his web site:  The LadderMill is the response to the challenge for exploiting the gigantic energy source contained in the airspace up to high altitudes of 10 km. The concept has been developed with the aim to convert wind energy at altitude in electricity on the ground in an environmental and cost effective manner.
  • Second project is: Cofounding www.happyenergy.com I encourage you all to visit this site and help to make/spread the Happy Energy Sign the new WorldWide Symbol for  Sustainable & Positive Energy.

Without the exuberance and happy energy of all of these support groups mentioned above and many more (there are over a hundred volunteers locally and thousand throughout the planet earth),

NUNA7(Netherlands) Is The First To Arrive At Finish Point of World Solar Challenge 2013

It’s great to see that even the cloudy day such as today would not dampen the enthusiasm of Solar Enthusiasts. Upon arriving at Hindmarsh Square of Adelaide, Australia, we are greeted by the Bridgestone Mascot entertaining youngsters among the crowd. There are even bikes made available by the Adelaide City Council for general public for free rides

today (Oct. 10, 2013).  What tickled me the most is the Victoria Square Fountain Substitute,

conjured up by Nuon Solar Team students…there is nothing that would be able to stop these students (quite capable of thinking outside of the box) from celebrating their timeless ritual of jumping into the Victoria Square Fountain. There is nothing as infectious as their exuberant laughter and hopping into the Victoria Square Fountain in celebrating a successful project beautifully executed.

Below is the Official Announcement from World Solar Challenge 2013: FLYING DUTCH SHINE THROUGH THE CLOUDS CONTEST FOR SECOND  The Nuon team from Delft University, the flying Dutch in the Netherlands claimed their title back today in the Challenger class as they crossed the finish of timing line first in the 2013 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge at 10.03 Darwin time. They took 33.05 hours to drive their car, Nuna 7, 3021 kilometres on solar power averaging a speed of 90.71 kilometres per hour.  The jubilant team and support crew celebrated briefly in Angle Vale as their time was recorded before driving to the Official Finish Line in Adelaide’s Hindmarsh Square. Champagne flowed as team did not let the lack of a fountain stop them from the traditional dunking synonymous with the finish line. They’d organised their own wading pool to ensure the tradition continued.  It was a close fought battle until the last 50 kilometres. The gallant team Tokai from Japan gave it all they had. The two teams shared the final checkpoint in Port Augusta just minutes apart. But as the rain came down and the clouds rolled in it became clear the Japanese team in their solar car Tokai Challenger were not going to be able to close the gap. There was drama for Team Tokai who were forced to stop and recharge. They were able to travel slowly into Angle Vale at 1.22 pm Darwin time in a time of 36.37 hours with an average speed of 82.43 kilometres per hour. Team Tokai were not able to proceed to the Official Finish line as they did not have enough solar power to travel at a safe speed in traffic. The question is now whether Team Twente from the Netherlands can reach the finish of timing and continue on to Hindmarsh Square.  Stanford from the US is currently in 4th, Belgium’s Punch Powertrain is in 5th position, followed by Solar Energy Racers who are now south of Port Augusta. Australia’s team Arrow are in 7th position and are expected to cross the finish line around midday tomorrow. Onda Solare from Italy and Blue Sky Solar from Canada are also in top ten position and still proceeding on solar power.  Closing the gap on the Challengers, are the Cruiser Class who left Coober Pedy this morning. Australia’s UNSW Sunswift solar sports car eVe, is now just 50 kilometres behind Team Arrow, followed by the Hochschule Bochum team from Germany and Team Eindhoven from the Netherlands. All Cruisers are expected into Adelaide tomorrow, judging will occur over the weekend.  In the Adventure Class, the Aurora team from Australia continue to dominate closing on many Challenger solar cars. The stage is set for more dramas tomorrow on the final leg to Adelaide. Provisional times & updates will be available following close of day five, 5pm Darwin time.

I have to admit that I am very curious about the Chinese entry this year, for this is the first time EVER that there is an entrant from China participating in World Solar Challenge, in the Challenger Class. We earthlings every where have been quite aware of the attention, effort, and progress made in solar technology/industry by China in recent years. So, it is with great anticipation and curiosity that we await for the information on features of Sun Shuttle of  Beijing Institute of Technology from China. It will bring new ideas about new energy vehicle design through exploration and application of solar power generation technology while creating a clean living environment. China has great incentive in solving  problem both in area associated with pollution and solar PV markets, let’s keep our eyes on this emerging solar car, the upcoming Sun Shuttle !

Fellow Solar & Car Race Enthusiasts,

I simply cannot contain  myself when I heard the news! 2013 is going to be an amazing year for the World Solar Challenge (WSC)! The CEO of the South Australian Motor Sports Board, Mark Warren, announced on World Environment Day, June 5, 2013, not only the new classes and regulations for WSC, but the largest number of entries EVER in the history of World Solar Challenge! Yes, the new WSC is set to sizzle with the record breaking 43 teams from 24 countries, preparing to take on the Aussie outback in the 3,000 kilometre journey from Darwin to Adelaide between October 6-13, 2013.

The three new classes (provided by WSC2013) are:

  1. Challenger Class: The slick, single seat aerodynamic vehicles making up the ‘Challenger class’, will be contested between the mostly big budget, solar powered elite, and line honours will go to the first car to travel 3,000 kilometres in a single stage across Australia under solar power. A major difference this year, however, is that they’ll have to do it on a four wheels, not three.
  2. Cruiser Class: This class is in deference to those teams who commit to the ideals of building a car that will never be the first across the line. Their goal is not speed but practicality. Inspired by the 2009 German entry, ‘Bo-Cruiser‘ and their successor ‘SolarWorldGT

    which circumnavigated the globe, teams in this class will be seeking to employ advanced technology and materials to create more traditional road vehicles. The cruisers will have the option of overnight charging at select locations and will be scored according to their energy efficiency and practical design features by a panel of judges.

  3. Adventure Class: This class targets first time entrants often with lower budgets who are still developing their solar technology and encourages participation and learning on a global stage Route Map of World Solar Challenge (3,000 km between Darwin in the Northern Territory and travels the Stuart Highway to Port Augusta and then via Highway 1 to the finish line in the City of Adelaide in South Australia, October 6-13, 2013)  As we await for this inspiring event of 2013, let me share an interview with the event organizer, Mr. Chris Selwood, during World Solar Challenge 2011, about the premise behind the World Solar Challenge, below:

“We threw down the gauntlet asking designers to push the limits of new technology and innovation by creating three new formalized classes. We wanted to ensure our event remained at the forefront of technology driving experienced teams and industry sponsors to exceed past results and at the same time inspire newcomers. Their response has been a resounding, bring it on!” Mr. Warren said. “We now have the makings of our most competitive field ever-in terms of time, speed, energy efficiency and innovation. All our top contenders are back to chase line honors. The changes also mean teams in both Challenger and Cruiser classes will be competing in brand new cars.” “Last year’s winners from Tokai University in Japan Tokai Challenger are looking for their third straight victory and former champions, Nuon Solar Team from the Netherlands, who had to be satisfied with second in 2011, are working furiously on Nuna 7, vowing to fight until the finish to get the gold back to Delft University. Of course, there is also the US Solar Champion Michigan team Quantum of University of Michigan still trying to best their third place result,” he said.

The event director Chris Selwood commented that this year’s top three are not a foregone conclusion, with all eyes on new countries such as China and returning entrants such as Saudi Arabia.

and I’m told first time entrants from the University of Western Sydney don’t put too much stack in history. Sunswift from the University NSW are also confident they have the aerodynamic expertise and innovative design to win in their Cruiser category although the TAFE SA team will be doing their best too.

Melbourne’s Aurora team, competing in the Adventure Class are likely to be one of the lightest competitors and will be chasing the fastest qualifying time in their No 87 Aurora Evolution,

so numbered to signify they’ve not missed an event since the Challenge began in 1987. New Queensland team, Arrow, hopes experience from seasoned campaigners will build a legacy for others to follow,” Mr. Selwood said.

Dear Readers,

This post may had been prepared/written earlier than the day it appears, but right after the finish of the Veolia World Solar Challenge (world solar car race of twenty countries, 3021 km (1877 mi) between Darwin, Australia, to Angle Vale (official finish line) and Adelaide (ceremonial finish line), Australia, and thirty-seven solar cars) I had to fly to a location/ country where my internet access was not very convenient (it kept on being disconnected whenever I tried to write).  However, I was able to load up various video clips onto youtube and I hope many of you have been enjoying these videos about the Veolia World Solar Challenge of 2011.  I understand one of you from Netherland is trying to gather as much information about the race as possible.  Since this is my first  time covering Veolia World Solar Challenge, or WSC (and only had time and budget for the start and end of the race), I hope these photos I took and video clips I uploaded (and filmed by Mike) to youtube will help to meet part of your need.  I promise you in two years (next Veolia World Solar Challenge) more detailed coverage about the scrutineering process (before the race) and events along the race will be included.  Please keep in mind that the goal and focus of this World Solar Challenge is to increase greater awareness and education for our future generations in application of solar energy in cars and to stimulate greater interest in math, science, and engineering. The emphasis is both in how far and how fast (rather than just how fast) these solar cars can go using energy from the sun. As a matter of fact, part of the rule this year had actually restricted total surface area of the solar cells to 6 sq m and of which only 3 sq m can be of GaAs (gallium arsenide) so to even the playing field.    Facility is available if a solar car needs to be “trailered” when insufficient sunshine is available for the duration of the race.  This year, due to the extra challenges of cloudiness, rain, and bush fire, only about 7 out of 37 solar cars were able to finish the course completely using solar energy.  The atmosphere at WSC is friendly and encouraging rather than fiercely competitive. One finds this to be true either in the scrutineering process (insuring safety of drivers/pilots and those around), tracking of the timing (please refer to: http://www.worldsolarchallenge.org/files/318_2011_veolia_world_solar_challenge_provisional_results_pending_protests.pdf), or in the finish presentation (ritual dip in the Victoria Fountain by all teams (those that were not too shy or too cold) at the end of the race or not so ritual “burning rubber” of the German team).  Finally, I’d like to take my hat off to Veolia World Solar Challenge 2011 team for being able to pull off a race of this magnitude (involving solar cars from twenty countries) with mostly volunteers working together to make this race work.  Running an organization composed of mostly volunteers is not the same as running a normal company (I’ve had experience in both and believe me, running an organization composed mostly of volunteers is not easy!).  So, if any of you out there with good ideas (to help improve the solar car race), funding, or time to volunteer, perhaps you’d like to contact Mr. Chris Selwood (leader and rightful owner of Veolia World Solar Challenge) and/or the organization at  http://www.worldsolarchallenge.org/contact_us For the ease and convenience of our readers’ pleasures, there are written descriptions for these solar cars with each of the youtube video clip of the interviews for its team members.  So please be sure to read (click on “Show more” at each youtube clip) about the descriptions for these solar cars.  I tried to take photograph and to interview as many of the participating solar cars of Veolia World Solar Challenge 2011 as possible, but due to time constraint, please forgive me if I missed any one.  With regard to all the video interviews at youtube, if any of the interviewees’ names is either misspelled or not mentioned, please feel free to contact me at sunisthefuture@gmail.com so I can make the necessary modification.  Below, you will find links to our youtube clips/interviews with various teams and photographs of these solar cars. Despite his busy schedule during the Veolia World Solar Challenge 2011, Mr. Chris Selwood managed to squeeze in a terrific  interview with Sun Is The Future, so to enable our readers to have a better understanding of the history and purpose behind Veolia World Solar Challenge 2011.  Mr. Selwood is a man of positive energy, enthusiasm, and vision.   He was previously seen in our footage as the Master of Ceremony on Oct. 16, 2011, at the Open Ceremony of Veolia World Solar Challenge 2011 in Darwin, Australia (in front of the Parliament House), and the voice behind the announcement as each and every one of the solar cars pulled in to the Victoria Square (the ceremonial finish line) of Adelaide, Australia. He deserves a great round of applause from all of us who have participated/viewed/reported  in/on Veolia World Solar Challenge 2011 for he had brought energy and vision to all of our hopes in the future for solar energy.  Without further ado, here we have Mr. Chris Selwood:
