Within two weeks after Hurricane Irma swept over St. John (smallest of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands), a survivor used debris from a nearby home to spell out “SEND TESLA“. With significant loss of life, lack of drinking water, dehydration, food scarcity, and disappearing power grid in Puerto Rico, the humanitarian effort by Tesla stepping in to help was truly welcomed. Bloomberg reported that Tesla had been sending hundreds of its Powerwall battery systems to be paired with solar panels to help restore the power back to the battered island. The monumental destruction brought by hurricanes Irma and Maria on the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in September is opening up the possibilities for companies such as Tesla to move in and establish a presence. Tesla sent representatives to the island to begin signing up survivors for solar services.

The Tesla company had already built solar energy production and storage “powerpacks” in the American Samoa and Hawaii. In case of Hawaii’s Kauai’i island, in Jan. of 2015, 80% of the peak daytime power demand at Kaua’i was met by solar energy and 22% of the daily average was met by renewable energy. With the help from Tesla, KIUC (Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative) is leading the way on planet earth in our transition toward Renewable Energy Age! You may also be interested in these articles below regarding KIUC:

Tesla indicated that some of the systems (Tesla Powerwall+Solar Panels) are already in Puerto Rico and others are on their way. Bloomberg also reported, “The company (Tesla) has employees on the ground to install them and is working with local organizations to identify locations.” The Puerto Rico island is still mostly without without power.

Thanks to Tesla for bringing power/electricity back to some of the people of Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.

Mia Farrow’s Twitter further reminds us of the BBC report of 55% of the people in Puerto Rico are without drinking water. Hopefully, President Trump’s visit tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017) to Puerto Rico will bring more attention, help, and water being dropped in by the U.S. National Guard to these Americans at Puerto Rico.

Those of us who have been following the solar industry for quite a few years/decades realize that reliable Energy Storage holds the key to Solar Energy Future. Therefore, it is not surprising that Intersolar North America 2015 placed a great deal of emphasis on the topic of Energy Storage-Battery Technology. The simple fact that the sun does not shine 24/7/365 necessitates reliable energy storage before solar energy can truly become mainstream. Important factors when choosing the energy storage system are: reliability, capacity, durability, and safety. With Tesla’s Powerwall and Powerpack being in the news much lately, I was curious about the energy storage systems being introduced by Sonnenbatterie,

a German company that has been a leader for energy storage in Europe for many years.

For the first time, Sonnenbatterie is entering the North American market and is the winner of  Bloomberg Pioneers Award 2015. I had the opportunity to chat with US management/CEO of Sonnenbatterie, Boris Von Bormann, about features that distinguish Sonnenbatterie’s units from Tesla’s Powerwall or Powerpack: Sonnenbatterie has a fully integrated (battery+inverter) system and can be taken apart whereas Tesla’s Powerwall or Powerpack contains only the battery system. In the age of collaboration, it would be great if Sonnenbatterie would also develop an inverter system that will work with Tesla’s battery technology. Sonnenbatterie’s system can also be integrated with the utility so to be more efficiently managed. The intelligent storage solution has a built-in smart meter

that enables the management of local energy production and consumption. By using a mobile app the houseowner decides whether to feed-in or directly consume the homemade electricity. Without further ado, let’s hear what Boris Von Bormann has in store for us, below:

I’d also like to share with you, another video, with Sonnenbatterie’s Christoph Ostermann, at Ecosummit 2013, below.  Sonnenbatterie is a true pioneer for Sonnenbatterie started selling their system prior to the existence of either supply or demand for the market/system. Within two years of its inception, Sonnenbatterie was able to sell 1500 systems. The growth continued, with about 8,000 systems sold in Germany by Spring of 2015 and production running at about 100-150 systems per week. At ECO13, Sonnenbatterie won the Ecosummit Award Jury Bronze medal in recognition of their outstanding business potential.

With the anticipated upcoming Solar Tsunami, it will be well worth the effort for investors and consumers in the solar energy market to keep an eye on Sonnenbatterie, for it has a fully integrated system and it can fill consumers’ order this year.

Recently, Sonnenbatterie has partnered with Outback Power to integrate their smart energy storage solutions with a trusted inverter for residential solar customers across North America. Historically, Outback Power has been a leading designer and manufacturer of advanced power electronics for renewable energy, backup power, and mobile applications. “OutBack Power’s Radian inverter/charger was a natural choice to integrate into Sonnenbatterie’s eco residential smart storage system,” said Boris von Bormann, CEO of Sonnenbatterie USA. “Working with OutBack, we are confident we can provide American home owners with the peace of mind our European customers have come to expect from Sonnenbatterie — that their home energy storage system will operate reliably in any environment and applications.” For a look of Outback Power’s Radian Series, in the video below:

The Solar Tsunami WIll Take Powerwall & Powerpack Into An Industry Greater Than $21 Billion !

Share

Dear Friends, Visitors/Viewers/Readers,

Tesla Powerwall Specs final

(Please click on red links & note magenta)

Many of you may be curious about the first week post-announcement of Powerwall from our May 1, 2015 post. The reception for Tesla’s new batteries has been OVERWHELMING!!! These are how Bloomberg Business breaks down the $800 million of orders:

  • The Powerwall home batteries designed to be paired with rooftop solar systems received 38,000 reservations.
  • Some customers order more than one battery. Average reservation is somewhere from 1.5 to 2 batteries. Musk described the total demand as “more like 50,000 or 60,000” batteries in early reservations.
  • The Powerwall comes in two designs at $3,000 or $3,500 each.
  • Total Powerwall orders so far is $178.8 million.
  • Tesla has received 2,500 reservations for the utility-scaled Powerpack, usually ordered/installed with “at least 10 Powerpacks”…equivalent to  25,000 units totally at 2.5 million kWh.
  • Musk tweeted last week that pricing for the Powerpack is $250 kWh.
  • Total Powerpack orders thus far is: $625 million.

So, Tesla’s grand total for battery reservations during the first week is $803.8 million! They sold out their first year’s production during the first week! It is no wonder they are already considering expanding the gigafactory after just one week!

Tesla is currently also working on projects with Target and Amazon and with electric utilities that include Southern California Electric and Texas-based OnCor. It is not only the individual home owners with distributed solar but utilities are also interested in building battery storage. Batteries can replace some peaker plants while strengthening the grid. With the cost of battery now falling as fast as the solar panels, some electricity from your outlet may soon be coming from battery storage. Powerwall & Powerpack, the cost effective battery storage, have now taken care of one of the arguments against solar, its intermittency. We are seeing the effect of first touch down of previously announced Solar Tsunami ! The world will be a cleaner, healthier, and better place, thanks to Elon Musk’s batteries and Solar Tsunami ! Perhaps Elon Musk’s American dream: a chicken in every pot, a Tesla in every garage powered by solar panels in the roof through Powerwall battery, will soon become a reality. Some people in the energy industry forecasted that although  currently $605 million industry, by 2024 it can very well become a $21 billion industry. Of course, many other experts in the field feel that number would be much bigger than $21 billion.
