Support For Solar Cars of World Solar Challenge

Bridgestone, local volunteers, and event organizer Chris Selwood have all done a terrific job in facilitating for the success of this event, World Solar Challenge 2015. But the reality is that much work, time, energy, and expenses are required for these universities/schools, students, and parents in order for these teams to participate (from research, design, testing, obtaining material, to plane fare and hotel expense, etc.) As a matter of fact, some of the teams that were participating in 2013 are not here in 2015 because of the lack of funding support. So, I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you  some ingenious methods (thought up by students and participants of WSC2015) of obtaining funding for future participation in World Solar Challenges.

A Historical Moment has arrived! The solar vehicle that has just come in first in the Cruiser Class of World Solar Challenge 2015, by Kogakuin University, is now selling it as a way to raise fund for future World Solar Challenge races. It is designed with a family in mind, traveling up to 100 km/h and with a carrying capacity for four. Any car collectors, car dealerships, educational institutions, or solar businesses would have a wonderful opportunity to acquire/showcase/support solar projects by considering to purchase this vehicle. Second Method Example: Solis Bellator of Liberty Christian School Solar Car Team from U.S.A.

Above is a student (Cameron Mutis, the media consultant of Solis Bellator) from Liberty Christian School of Argyle, TX (of USA). These students are amazing! They simply got dressed and pitched at various organizations, companies, and individuals to gather $150,000 then designed, made, and participated in World Solar Challenge 2015. In this process, they have not only learned about the building of a solar car, but also various aspects of locating resources and funding an organization or project. What they have accomplished is not easy, especially when you consider that some of the other university solar car teams are running on a budget of multiple millions of dollars and with guidance from industries. I suspect their teacher/coach Brent Dragoo had contributed much to the success of the team, for between Oct. 20-21, their charge controller died and they had to order another from the company in Brisbane to overnight it to Coober Pedy. Truly resourceful! Third Method Example: Fund Raising Campaigns globally via various Crowdfunding platforms such as Indiegogo or Kickstarter, etc. Remember that there are a lot of crowdfunding platforms out there. You may find one or more most suitable for your particular situation/school by googling. Keep in mind that tips on how to start or run a successful campaign may be obtained via youtube. Incredible as it may seem, one of the well known solar campaigns funded via indiegogo was by an Idaho (USA) couple who were designing for Solar Roadway. They were asking for $1 million but ended up receiving slightly more than $2 million by the end of the whole campaign. When any one team is running a campaign, it is important to try to let as many people know about the motivation and duration of the campaign. Sun Is The Future would be gladly help to assist in letting the world know about your campaign. But it is crucial that individual solar car team would set up their own campaign and provide their own web site with appropriate contact information before contacting Sun Is The Future at sunisthefuture@gmail.com . Sun Is The Future will help to promote campaigns but would not be involved with the collection of donations.

May there always be plentiful beautiful Sunshine and sufficient funds for these beautiful Solar Cars for many many more decades to come….

Cars of The Future-Solar Cars Will Take On Challenges Between Darwin & Adelaide, Australia, During Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2015

As solar energy and solar car enthusiasts, and solar car racers and teams from all corners of the globe converge upon Darwin, Australia, awaiting for the first day of this year’s Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2015, these 44 teams from 25 countries/regions are taking on the ultimate endurance challenge in the harshest of climates to demonstrate to the world that our automotive future will be shaped by the solar energy. This 3,000 kilometer event between Darwin and Adelaide, Australia, will begin from the State Square (in front of the Parliament House) of Darwin, Australia, on Sunday, October 18, 2015, at 8:30 a.m., and the leading cars are expected to arrive late on Wednesday (Oct. 21, 2015) or early Thursday (Oct. 22, 2015), finishing at the City of Adelaide’s Victoria Square, Australia.

To give you a feel of what these solar cars might be like, allow me to present to you what took place during the last race, World Solar Challenge 2013, below:

I was very fortunate to have caught up with Chris Selwood, the event organizer of World Solar Challenge 2013, at Hindmarsh Square in Adelaide, Australia, to chat about this once-every-two-year event. This year, about 40 teams from 23 countries participated in Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2013 to cross 3000 km between Darwin and Adelaide, Australia.

Mr. Selwood shed some light on the history of World Solar Challenge, its purpose, its growth, its future, and the opportunities it provides for companies such as Google and others for recruitment.  This event is well supported by enthusiastic energy and fantastic talents for our transition into the future of renewable/solar energy world. Here is the final results you’ve all been waiting for, regarding World Solar Challenge 2013 (official release from World Solar Challenge 2013):

The Dutch have dominated this year’s 2013 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. Having already won the elite Challenger Class title when team NUNA7 of Nuon Solar Team

made it two from two winning the Cruiser Class category announced tonight at the Awards Ceremony in Adelaide.  With a score of 97.5% to Eindhoven it was perhaps closer than the Dutch had predicted, with Germany’s Hochschule Bochum team

a close second on 93.9%, in turn just beating Australia’s UNSW Sunswift team who scored 92.3% in

third place.  The Cruiser class was judged on the key criteria of solar kilometres travelled; passenger kilometres; speed; energy efficiency; and a subjective element of design and practicality.  Of the eight Cruisers built especially for the Australian event, four completed the 3020 kilometres on full solar power, the University of Minnesota from the USA

joining the ranks with the Dutch, German and Australian teams, taking out fourth place with 79.2%.  Each of the top teams had differing strategic approaches to the contest. Eindhoven being a four seater car easily accounted for the most passenger kilometres; Bochum were the most energy efficient, and UNSW Sunswift were the fastest to the finish line.  Final judging occurred on Saturday afternoon with the expert panel assessing characteristics such as: ease of access; comfort; controls; features; style; ease of charging, overall desirability; road registration; parking and cargo space. Judges put the cars through their paces on the finish line. Teams were tested for their parking skills, their ability to load the trunk with numerous suitcases and the ultimate cargo test – could the Aussie esky also be stowed the right way up in the trunk?  The judging panel spent hours deliberating final scores with the topl three cruisers all shining in their own right. Team Bochum’s Powercore Suncruiser scored high on accessibility and desirability and Sunswift’s ‘EVE’ was the most stylish. In the end it came down to just five points between the three top teams with the world’s first four seater solar family car , ‘STELLA’ taking the honours.  The remaining four cruisers completed the Challenge with a combination of solar kilometres and trailer kilometres: Goko High School from Japan (2288 km);

Event Director Chris Selwood said that after more than 3,000 kilometres it was perhaps fitting, in a category that was intended to bridge the gap between high-end technology and driving practicality, that the results would come down to practical design and the ability to appeal to every day drivers.

“I congratulate Team Eindhoven on their innovation, practical design, and foresight, to think outside the square and add the extra seats. ‘STELLA‘ is a wonderful solar car in a field of exceptional cars and teams. I look forward to 2015 and the prospect of more cruisers as we work toward the world’s most efficient electric car,” Chris said.

began, having gotten their solar cars to Darwin only to be faced with the reality of not being able to compete. For others the strong wind gusts, dust storms, rolling spinifex and sheer distance proved too much.  Regardless of their placing, all teams had reason to celebrate their achievements and were given a rousing reception and their moment in the sun on the official finish line at Hindmarsh Square in Adelaide.  In the Challenger class, Onda Solare from Italy in their solar car Emilia 3,

made the 3020 kilometres under solar power for the first time crossing the finish line at 4.25 pm on Friday putting them into the top ten. In the Adventure Class, Team Antakari from Chile also made the distance under

full solar power crossing at 9.31am Saturday morning which put them in second place in their class.  With 22 countries competing in Australia for the event, the Challenge welcomed first timers: China, Sweden, Indonesia, and Colombia.

China’s entrant from the Beijing Institute of Technology, Sun Shuttle, was welcomed into Adelaide today, having recorded 1398 solar kilometres. Colombia’s Universidad EAFIT Empress Publicas de Medelin, in their solar car Primavera, recorded 2505 solar kilometres; The Jonkoping University team from Sweden in their solar car, Natural Magic Energy, struck difficulties in the windy conditions, despite their damaged car they managed to record 1301 solar kilometres; and the team from Indonesia’s Intitut Teknologi Sepuluh Surabaya in their solar car Sapu Angin Surya drove 748 kilometres under solar power.  Event Director Chris Selwood congratulated all the teams saying the spirit of competition is just as important as the result.  “This is a truly unique event that brings people from diverse backgrounds and cultures together across the Australian outback. I look forward to our final day tomorrow, with our first ever street parade from 2pm followed by the Awards Ceremony and the announcement of the inaugural Cruiser Class winner,” he said.

For Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, activities at Hindmarsh Square will include:

  1. 38 solar car teams from 22 countries
  2. Hire a free Adelaide City Bike
  3. Adelaide Clean Drive – free test drive – some of the latest lowest emission production cars through the city streets
  4. Feast on Fork on the Road, from 12noon Sunday
  5. The world’s first solar car street parade, from 2pm Sunday starting in Hindmarsh Square and travelling through the city streets to Edwards park.

It’s great to see that even the cloudy day such as today would not dampen the enthusiasm of Solar Enthusiasts. Upon arriving at Hindmarsh Square of Adelaide, Australia, we are greeted by the Bridgestone Mascot entertaining youngsters among the crowd. There are even bikes made available by the Adelaide City Council for general public for free rides

today (Oct. 10, 2013).  What tickled me the most is the Victoria Square Fountain Substitute,

conjured up by Nuon Solar Team students…there is nothing that would be able to stop these students (quite capable of thinking outside of the box) from celebrating their timeless ritual of jumping into the Victoria Square Fountain. There is nothing as infectious as their exuberant laughter and hopping into the Victoria Square Fountain in celebrating a successful project beautifully executed.

Below is the Official Announcement from World Solar Challenge 2013: FLYING DUTCH SHINE THROUGH THE CLOUDS CONTEST FOR SECOND  The Nuon team from Delft University, the flying Dutch in the Netherlands claimed their title back today in the Challenger class as they crossed the finish of timing line first in the 2013 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge at 10.03 Darwin time. They took 33.05 hours to drive their car, Nuna 7, 3021 kilometres on solar power averaging a speed of 90.71 kilometres per hour.  The jubilant team and support crew celebrated briefly in Angle Vale as their time was recorded before driving to the Official Finish Line in Adelaide’s Hindmarsh Square. Champagne flowed as team did not let the lack of a fountain stop them from the traditional dunking synonymous with the finish line. They’d organised their own wading pool to ensure the tradition continued.  It was a close fought battle until the last 50 kilometres. The gallant team Tokai from Japan gave it all they had. The two teams shared the final checkpoint in Port Augusta just minutes apart. But as the rain came down and the clouds rolled in it became clear the Japanese team in their solar car Tokai Challenger were not going to be able to close the gap. There was drama for Team Tokai who were forced to stop and recharge. They were able to travel slowly into Angle Vale at 1.22 pm Darwin time in a time of 36.37 hours with an average speed of 82.43 kilometres per hour. Team Tokai were not able to proceed to the Official Finish line as they did not have enough solar power to travel at a safe speed in traffic. The question is now whether Team Twente from the Netherlands can reach the finish of timing and continue on to Hindmarsh Square.  Stanford from the US is currently in 4th, Belgium’s Punch Powertrain is in 5th position, followed by Solar Energy Racers who are now south of Port Augusta. Australia’s team Arrow are in 7th position and are expected to cross the finish line around midday tomorrow. Onda Solare from Italy and Blue Sky Solar from Canada are also in top ten position and still proceeding on solar power.  Closing the gap on the Challengers, are the Cruiser Class who left Coober Pedy this morning. Australia’s UNSW Sunswift solar sports car eVe, is now just 50 kilometres behind Team Arrow, followed by the Hochschule Bochum team from Germany and Team Eindhoven from the Netherlands. All Cruisers are expected into Adelaide tomorrow, judging will occur over the weekend.  In the Adventure Class, the Aurora team from Australia continue to dominate closing on many Challenger solar cars. The stage is set for more dramas tomorrow on the final leg to Adelaide. Provisional times & updates will be available following close of day five, 5pm Darwin time.

Yes, we’ve just arrived at the sunny Darwin, Australia, for the World Solar Challenge 2013, soon (between Darwin and Adelaide, Australia, from  Oct. 6-13, 2013) to begin.  Darwin is the capital city of NT (Northern Territory) of Australia, situated on the Timor Sea. It is the most populated of the two cities in the sparsely populated NT, with a population of 129,062.

Since our last visit to Darwin two years ago (World Solar Challenge 2011), it’s gotten much more densely populated, resulting from a collaborative $33 billion Ichthys gas project between the Japanese gas company Inpex and its French partner Total in Darwin and off the coast of Western Australia. If you’re interested in finding out more about this project, then click-> Inpex confirms $33 bn Top End gas project. The influx of such huge projects has foreseeable outcomes: pace of life is picked up; longer opening hours for the local grocery stores such as Woolworths (closing hours changed from 5:00P.M. to 10:00P.M.);increased number of Hilton brand hotels (none in 2011, 3 in 2013);tripling Darwin real estate values in short period of 2 years.  It never fails to amaze me how well informed Australian taxi drivers are with local and international news. We were well caught up with most critical news of past two years during our 20 minute taxi ride from Darwin airport to our hotel.

Shortly after our arrival, we (the media) had received a terrific reception by all the teams of World Solar Challenge 2013 at Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex.

Who will take pole on the start…?All 40 teams (from 23 countries) have now been through the 2013 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge extensive three day static scrutineering process. (For a closer look of the static scrutineering process, allow me to share a video produced by the team from Singapore, SunSpec, that persevered through this process, below)


and Who will take to the start?The focus now turns to Hidden Valley race track tomorrow, Saturday 5 October, for the Dynamic Scrutineering involving a timed qualifying lap and Safety trials. Teams will take to the Hidden Valley track in an effort to post a time fast enough to ensure them a top place on the grid.Event Director Chris Selwood said even though the event is contested over 3000 kilometres and is about much more than just speed, the ‘top guns’ in the Elite Challenger Class will be wanting to post an impressive time.“Being in a top ten position ensures a cleaner run out of Darwin,” Chris said.“With static scrutineering now complete the teams have just one more hurdle to pass before they can take to the line. After such extensive preparation which for many has been over two years or more, to not compete at this late stage would be extremely disappointing for a team.“I think it’s easy to underestimate the commitment, time and resources needed to compete in this event. It is an achievement for teams just to get here,” Chris said.“As this event crosses some of the world’s most unforgiving terrain, over an arduous 3,000 kilometres in extreme temperatures, safety is paramount. Bridgestone has announced it will be the title sponsor of the World Solar Challenge 2013 to beheld from Darwin to Adelaide from October 6-13.The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2013 will see a record 45 teams from 26 countries participate in a 3000 kilometre contest which crosses the continent using only solar energy to power the vehicles. Chief Executive of the South Australian Motor Sports Board Mark Warren said the Bridgestone partnership continued the high standing of the World Solar Challenge on the global stage.“It is fitting that the naming rights for 2013 go to such a progressive company that cites within one of its corporate philosophies ‘Shinshu-Dokuso’ which I’m told means creative pioneering,”Mr Warren said.“In our 26 year history we too have aspired to be creative pioneers in our quest to realize the dream of the world’s first truly efficient solar electric vehicle. With the support of Bridgestone this quest is one step closer to reality.”The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2013 will feature three separate classes; the ‘Adventure Class’ for pre-2013 event cars, the ‘Cruiser Class’ for vehicles designed for practicality and the elite ‘Challenger Class’, which compete for line honors with the fastest overall time.
