Further Expansion By QBotix, Integration of Robotics Into Solar Tracking System

Do you remember one of our posts during 2012 about a tracking system designed by a new company called QBotix?  To refresh your/our memory, please refer to the paragraph from our previous 2012 post, below:

The recently unveiled RTS by QBotix, a new company (from Menlo Park, CA) that is bringing the power of robotics to solar energy. The Robotic Tracking System (RTS) is a comprehensive dual-axis tracking system (at a single-axis system’s cost but generates up to 15% more energy) that employs rugged, intelligent and mobile robots to dynamically operate solar power plants and maximize energy output.  By having the robot (some call it solbot) running on a track, as a monorail,  servicing up to 200 solar panels, at 40-minute intervals throughout the day, this tracking system can help the solar panels to receive a performance boost of as much as 40% over existing fixed mount systems and lowers the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) by up to 20%.  Furthermore, RTS offers fast installation and has low operation and maintenance costs, and is compatible with all solar panels and mounting foundations.  When connecting with each panel, RTS adjusts the angle of the panel and collects data about the panel.  I can see the potential of a self-cleaning RTS/solbot that may be programmed to conserve/minimize the water use in cleaning all solar panels.  Wouldn’t that be great?!  Apparently, RTS also has a certified IP-65, meaning it is impervious to dust and water.

Much has happened to QBotix since we last interviewed  its founder and CEO Wasiq Bokhari and Director of Engineering Lalo Ruiz in 2012. Recently QBotix has announced that it has raised $12 million in Round B  financing through its venture capital partners, E.On Climate and Renewables and Iberdrola Renewables. This is in addition to having already successfully completed a $1 million U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) SunShot Initiative award project, and received the  recognition by Fast Company as one of the world’s top 10 most innovative companies in robotics. When we met QBotix in 2012, it was a design with zero installations, but now it’s gone global, with 80 MW  installations and contracts or partnerships in U.S., Europe, Latin America, Australia, Japan, and further development in Chile and South Africa. QBotix has the revolutionary, highly efficient technology that will contribute significantly to reduce the balance of system costs in solar projects. We will look forward to its continued expansion and spreading throughout our planet.

GTAT Bringing Merlin To Solar Industry

As the global demand for solar energy continues to grow while the industry is facing downward pricing pressure, reduced subsidies, and solar trade tensions, it becomes increasingly important for PV manufacturers to achieve further cost reductions and improved cell efficiency. GTAT accomplishes this by introducing the innovative metallization & cell interconnect technology (Merlin Advanced Metallization Technology) that transforms the solar module into a less expensive, more efficient panel that is easier to install.

The Merlin Advanced Metallization Technology enables greater performance than the traditional modules by:

  1. Eliminating up to 80% of the expensive silver paste used in the traditional cells and modules, leading to cost reduction.
  2. The same screen printing equipment installed in cell line can be used to print the segmented fingers onto the cell
  3. Flexible grid that eliminates silver bus bars: a plated copper grid is attached to the segmented fingers on the top of the solar cell. The combination of segmented fingers and flexible grid makes it easier to move current off the cell. The flexible grid provides 20 paths/highways for the current to travel along rather than the three bus bars found on the traditional solar cells.
  4. Reducing shading by bus bars and increasing electrical connections on the surface of the cell  lead to increased cell efficiency and increased power output (by 3-5% compared to standard module).
  5. Improving the interconnection between cells by eliminating the need for stringing and tabbing of the old technology, providing highly flexible and durable way to connect cells while eliminating the bus bar tabs of traditional cells. Cells can therefore be connected closer together, allowing a smaller and more flexible module than the conventional module.
  6. The flexible tabs at the end of each grid solve the problem generally associated with breakage of modules during transport resulting from metal fatigue when ribbons break due to dynamic loading conditions during shipping.
  7. GTAT is almost 50% lighter than the conventional modules.
  8. Easier installation results in lower balance of system costs

GTAT is already working with select customers to implement Merlin, involving custom-made copper meshes soldered on to PV cells instead of bus bars. GTAT will produce and sell customized copper meshes to customers, and expects to reach a production capacity of 100 MW annually by the end of 2014. In early 2015, it will begin to offer a wire attachment tool to customers, which will replace the tabbing stringer. Orders may be taken in last quarter of 2014, so in 2015, solar PV module makers will be able to work with this new technology to replace silver bus bars with a customizable copper mesh, reducing silver usage, increasing power output, and allowing lighter modules to be transported and installed.

Ideal Power’s 2-Port & 3-Port Hybrid Converters at InterSolar North America 2014

I’d like to share with you an interview at InterSolar North America 2014, in Moscone Center of San Francisco, CA on July 9, 2014. The future of the multi-billion dollar solar industry depends much on the progress in combining PV with energy storage. In this post, Sun Is The Future will present to you Ideal Power’s AWARD winning 30KW Hybrid PV Storage Converter (which is becoming the de facto industry standard to enable PV+storage integration). Ideal Power received its award on June 4th during a ceremony at InterSolar Europe in Munich, Germany, the world’s largest exhibition for the solar industry. Ideal Power’s technology stood out due to its ability to combine PV and battery systems with an efficiency level of up to 97%. It also provides modular flexibility for different applications, particularly in off-grid systems. Due to the dramatic improvement in size, weight, cost, and efficiency over conventional converters, the Hybrid Converter integrates multiple power sources (i.e. PV+storage+grid) to lower the cost of delivering grid resiliency during blackouts such as Superstorm Sandy. Currently the 2-port converter system (100 lbs) is used for demand reduction in grid-tied system (currently used in Walgreen of  Southern CA) whereas the 3-port converter will be in one box and creates its own microgrid during power outage.

My friends and neighbors in Florida may be quite pleasantly surprised to find out how much (according to 1bog’s calculations, $139 per month) they may be able to save each month by going Solar! 🙂

Those residing in Hawaii may save as much as $270 per month, on average. The lowest savings would be for state of Kansas, averaging $35 per month.  Even residents in Alaska would be able to save about $65 per month by going solar!

Are We Moving Fast Enough Toward Solar-Wind-Water-Geothermal-Biomass?

Allow me to share with you the finalized data from FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) for U.S. Energy Infrastructure Update for 2013.  Some of the key findings from Office of Energy Projects-Energy Infrastructure Update of U.S. by 2013 from FERC are presented in the two tables below:

U.S. New Generation In-Service Power Capacity During 2013, Data Made Available By FERC

1. U.S. New Generation In-Service (New Build and Expansion), Jan.-Dec. of 2013 Chart: On horizontal axis, 10 top sources of new U.S. power capacity (in 2013) are ranked in terms of Newly Installed Capacity (MW) during 2013, in the order from: 1st being Natural Gas (7,270 MW), 2nd is Solar (2,936 MW), 3rd is Coal (1,543 MW), 4th is Wind (1,129 MW), 5th is Biomass (777 MW), 6th is Water (378 MW), 7th is Waste Heat (76 MW), 8th is Geothermal Steam (59 MW), 9th is Oil (38 MW), 10th is Nuclear (0 MW).

Even though Solar’s rank of 2 is impressive from the above chart, in reality the actual solar power capacity generated during 2013 is much greater than 2,936 MW. If you’d refer to FERC’s key findings from Office of Energy Projects-Energy Infrastructure Update of U.S. by 2013 from FERC , you would realize that the 2,936 MW did not include the distributed solar (rooftop solar power systems) installed in 2013. Various sources indicated that California added more rooftop solar capacity in 2013 than in the past 30 years combined . As the distributed solar will continue to play an increasingly significant role in solar capacity generation, such data needs to be included in the calculation in the future in order to provide a more complete picture.

2. U.S. Total Installed Operating Generating Capacity By December of 2013 Chart: On horizontal axis, 10 top sources of total U.S. power capacity by 2013 are ranked in terms of Total Installed Capacity (GW) up to December of 2013, in the order from: 1st being Natural Gas (487.21 GW), 2nd is Coal (333.43 GW), 3rd is Nuclear (107.32 GW), 4th is Water (97.88 GW),  5th is Wiind (60.29 GW), 6th is Oil (47.03 GW), 7th is Biomass (15.74 GW), 8th is Solar (7.42 GW), 9th is Geothermal Steam (3.83 GW), 10th is Waste Heat (1.13 GW).

The second table above reminds us that despite how much renewable energy has grown in U.S., the total installed operating generating capacity from renewable such as solar, water,geothermal, biomass, and wind only add up to about 15% of the total U.S. installed operating generating capacity as of 2013.  Solar only represents 0.64% and wind represents 5.2% of the total U.S. installed operating generating capacity as of 2013.  Renewable Energy is still in its early stage of its evolution. In 2014 solar power is projected to have another year of record growth. To this I say: we surely need it!

Some of my friends, acquaintances, and relatives find it puzzling why I would be so anxious while optimistic about the Solar/Renewable future.  The two tables above truly reflect my state of mind toward current state of affair: optimistic with exponential growth of Solar Capacity (table 1) while anxiously worried about millions of people who will be losing their homes as a result of climate change (this would be the case if Clean and/or Renewable Energy takes up such a small percentage of the overall total power capacity as demonstrated in table 2 above )….we need to move toward Renewable…toward Solar-Wind-Water-Geothermal-Biomass much faster….in order to avoid more of what is likely to come……for millions and millions of people on planet earth…..

Let’s maintain our optimism in moving forward. We need to optimize the most effective incentive policy to drive all Renewables forward…be it Solar-Wind-Water-Geothermal-Biomass….in order to prevent millions and millions of people in becoming homeless in the decades to come…..

SANTA CLARA, Calif.  (Feb. 4, 2014) – Green Charge Networks, a leader in intelligent energy storage, has signed agreements for 1 MW of energy storage with retail chain customers and city municipalities that are seeking to reduce their electricity bills through smart grid technologies. Many businesses in California and New York City pay 40% or more of their monthly electric bill in “demand charges” based on their peak electricity use. Green Charge Network’s (GCN) proven GreenStationTM  technology uses utility and weather data to predict peak use and store energy accordingly. This reduces these demand charges and saves businesses thousands of dollars7-Eleven stores have been using GCN’s GreenStationTM successfully for the past two years. One 7-Eleven GreenStationTM  in New York endured Hurricane Sandy and then went on to save the business 56% on their electricity bills during the 2013 summer heat wave. Not only can smart grid technologies like GreenStationTM  save businesses thousands of dollars on their electricity bills, they are also an important tool in both climate change adaptation and mitigation. GreenStationTM is designed to withstand storms as fierce as Hurricane Sandy or temperatures as extreme as the recent polar vortex. The combination of an aging utility grid and increasing storms due to climate change is a deadly mix. Between 2003-2012, the US experienced 679 major weather related outages, including 7 of the 10 costliest storms in US history (White House Report).
