Falcon 9 Launched and Landed Successfully on Atlantic Ship on May 6, 2016, From Cape Canaveral, While Observing the 4R’s (Recycle-Reuse-Repair-Reduce).

Out of his concern for the future of mankind and desire to reduce the risk of human extinction , reduce the cost of space transportation, and making human life multiplanetary possible via setting up a human colony on Mars, Elon Musk became the founder, CEO and CTO of SpaceX .

Of the three successful landings and recoveries post-launch of Falcon 9 within the past one and half year (Dec. of 2015, April of 2016, and May 6 of 2016), May 6, 2016 is the second time the rocket has landed intact on the ship ( Falcon 9 landed on the floating drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean).

During May 6, 2016 Falcon 9 mission, a Japanese communication satellite is sent to a very high orbit above Earth (aka geostationary transfer orbit) despite the fact that the rocket is subjected to extreme velocities and re-entry heating, making it difficult to have a successful landing. But shortly after the launch, SpaceX confirmed that not only did Falcon 9 make a perfect landing, but it deployed its satellite correctly.

SpaceX will continue to attempt to land the rocket at sea/ocean for its next few launches (about two third of its overall launches) because it is safer and requires less fuel than landing on land (explained below):

For a better understanding of SpaceX’s achievements: SpaceX’s achievements include the first privately funded, liquid-propellant rocket (Falcon 1) to reach orbit, in 2008; the first privately funded company to successfully launch, orbit and recover a spacecraft (Dragon), in 2010; and the first private company to send a spacecraft (Dragon) to the ISS, in 2012. The launch of SES-8, in 2013, was the first SpaceX delivery into geosynchronous orbit, while the launch of the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR), in 2015, was the company’s first delivery beyond Earth orbit. On December 21, 2015, SpaceX successfully returned a first stage back to the launch site and accomplished a vertical landing, the first such accomplishment by a rocket on an orbital trajectory. On April 8, 2016, with the launch of CRS-8, SpaceX successfully vertically landed a first stage on an ocean drone platform and delivered Dragon to Low Earth Orbit. On May 6, 2016, SpaceX again landed a first stage, but on a geostationary transfer mission, another first.

Furthermore, SpaceX is able to reduce the cost of the design and therefore cost of the space transport through a reusable launch system. A reusable launch system (RLS, or reusable launch vehicle, RLV) is a launch system which is capable of launching a payload into space more than once. This contrasts with expendable launch systems, where each launch vehicle is launched once and then discarded. No completely reusable orbital launch system is currently in use. The closest example was the partially reusable Space Shuttle. The orbiter, which included the Space Shuttle main engines, and the two solid rocket boosters, were reused after several months of refitting work for each launch. The external tank and launch vehicle load frame were discarded after each flight. However, several at least partially reusable systems are currently under development, such as the Falcon 9 full thrust (first stage).

Elon, The World Is Ready For Tesla Model 3!!!

This is SO EXCITING!  I can’t wait to share the unveiling of Tesla 3 that many of us have been waiting for….Model 3 has achieved 215 miles of range (at minimum) per charge, with automatic safety features, starting at only $35,000 before incentive. Buyers of plug-in hybrids and electric cars benefit from a tax credit of $2,500 to $7,500, depending on the size of the battery in the car. On the low end of the spectrum, cars with 4 kWh battery packs will qualify for a $2,500 tax credit. The credit maxes out at $7,500 for cars with a 16 kWh battery pack, like the Chevy Volt. The credits were provided as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, otherwise known as the “stimulus bill.” (The incentive begins phasing out after an automaker sells 200,000 vehicles that are eligible for the credit.)

This is all part of Elon Musk’s effort in helping to speed up our transition toward the renewable future by accelerating world’s transition into sustainable transport. Let us give Elon Musk a round of applause for, unveiling of Tesla Model 3 (March 31, 2016 event), and for his contribution in slowing the CO2 emission into earth’s atmosphere….below:

Tesla Model 3 is essentially the fourth generation vehicle subsequent to Roadster, Model X, and Model S. Now Model 3 is designed to attain the highest safety ratings in every category. All Model 3’s will have supercharging capability (translating to freedom to travel) and be able to contain a 7-ft surfboard inside. There are currently about 3608 superchargers globally, about 3689 destinations superchargers. By the end of next year, number of superchargers will double ( to 7,200) and quadruple destination superchargers (to 15,000). The gigafactory will be busy, with high volume and the most advanced technology, and will be the world’s largest lithium ion cell producer…  50 gigawatt-hour per year of production!  It is the first Tesla electric vehicle that will be able to be massively afforded by general public and will definitely be able to dramatically help to reduce CO2 emission into our planet earth’s atmosphere. And thanks, Elon, for adding the autopilot feature into Model 3. Within the first 24 hours of its unveiling, there were 115,000 orders for Tesla Model 3. The world is definitely ready for Tesla Model 3!!! For those of you who want to order Tesla Model 3 online, please visit Tesla.com . Delivery will not begin until 2017 the earliest. Way to go, Elon!

Elon Musk’s Warning For Mankind

This is the message from Elon Musk: For the sake of future of earthlings and human kind, let the oil prices not be the most significant determining factor for future of EV industry. Let us not sacrifice the future of earth for the present. Let us not continue putting so much carbon into the atmosphere. Sooner or later we will all have to transition into an electric future. It is much better for the planet earth that we transition sooner than later into the solar electric future.

Elon Musk’s Focus On The Future

Perhaps I am biased. But in my limited perception, I tend to think solar enthusiasts are also more likely to be futurists. This is a post, with two videos (one edited version of another), for all of you solar futurists out there!

I think you  already know and I  cannot say/add enough good things about Elon Musk or Tesla. This past Tuesday, Elon Musk was interviewed by New China TV in Hong Kong, where he commented that Chinese Minister of Finance mentioned Tesla favorably in a recent speech, with regard to Tesla’s effort in making its patents open sourced so that any company in China or elsewhere can utilize these patents to create electric vehicles. He further commented that Solar Energy can easily power the whole of China, the most populated country on earth (2015 population data:  China has 1,361,512,535  India has 1,251,695,584  United States has 321,368,864, etc.). Below, you will find this comment (top video) edited from the complete interview (bottom video):

This will be a terrific move for the planet earth! For if all of China and India will be converting their vehicles to electric vehicles sooner as a result of Tesla’s patents being shared, the industry charger (Tesla’s Supercharger Event) will be standardized much more quickly and the CO2 emission of the planet will be reduced at a much faster rate, slowing the rate of climate change. In this process, both China and India will have much cleaner environment. This will also translate into much cleaner planet earth.

For the complete interview where Elon Musk speaks about Tesla, sustainable energy, and Mars at the Venture Forum in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is the city where the most Tesla per capita (with the highest percentage of vehicles that is Tesla or electric vehicles any where in the world) and can function as the model for other high density cities to transform into sustainable transport future. Elon Musk further embellishes on the importance of focusing on creating products that would be loved by the customers. There are also discussions of: the future possibility in solving Beijing traffic issue via tunnel or flying cars; currently available supercharging station networks in China (such that people have driven from Beijing to Tibet in Tesla); upcoming affordable Tesla3 to be mainstream;whether rote educational format would be good for producing innovators;all new cars on the road will be autonomous within fifteen years; submmersible Tesla;pertonic ideal of a perfect car;how to supply Hong Kong with sufficient solar power;bringing human kind to Mars and enabling earthlings to become interplanetary beings and to be inspired and transcend beyond what is the current limit; anticipation of first flights to Mars by 2025; necessary high tolerance for pain if some one wants to try to build startup;brain computer interface at the neuron level (concept of brain internet). Solar Powered Maglev/Evacuated Tube Transport For Our Magical Planet Earth

Wow, we are surely living in a magical time! Another form of upcoming mass transport is based on the magical Maglev (derived from magnetic levitation) with upgrade.   It is a transport method that uses magnetic levitation to move vehicles without touching the ground. A vehicle would travel along a guideway using magnets to create both lift and propulsion, thereby reducing friction and allowing higher speed. Here is a TED Talk that demonstrates this concept, below:


Of  course, such a magical technology would have many potential applications;for example: the Shanghai Maglev Train, also known as the Transrapid, is the fastest commercial train currently in operation and has a top speed of 430 km/h (270 mph) (and once reached 311 mph or 501 km/h in a pre-launch test). The line was designed to connect Shanghai Pudong International Airport and the outskirts of central Pudong, Shanghai. It covers a distance of 30.5 kilometres in 8 minutes.

Maglev trains move more smoothly and more quietly than wheeled mass transit systems. They are relatively unaffected by weather. The power needed for levitation is typically not a large percentage of its overall energy consumption; most goes to overcome drag, as with other high-speed transport. Maglev trains hold the speed record for rail transport. Vacuum tube train systems might allow maglev trains to attain still higher speeds, though no such vacuum tubes have been built commercially yet.

Compared to conventional (normal) trains, differences in construction affect the economics of maglev trains, making them much more efficient. For high-speed trains with wheels, wear and tear from friction along with the “hammer effect” from wheels on rails accelerates equipment wear and prevents high speeds. Conversely, maglev systems have been much more expensive to construct, offsetting lower maintenance costs. Despite decades of research and development, only two commercial maglev transport systems are in operation, with two others under construction. In April 2004, Shanghai’s Transrapid system began commercial operations. In March 2005, Japan began operation of its relatively low-speed HSST “Linimo” line in time for the 2005 World Expo.

In its first three months, the Linimo line carried over 10 million passengers. South Korea and the People’s Republic of China are both building low-speed maglev routes of their own designs, one in Beijing and the other at Seoul’s Incheon Airport. Many maglev projects are controversial, and the technological potential, adoption prospects and economics of maglev systems are often debated.

Even though no commercial vacuum tube train systems have been built yet, scientists at Southwest Jiaotong University in China have reportedly built a maglev train that could reach 1,800 mph (2,900 km/h). A vacuum is used to minimize air resistance, according to The Daily Mail.Dr. Deng Zigang, the project leader, claims such vacuum tube train systems could be used for military or space launch systems. At the high speed of maglev train system, air resistance becomes a serious issue.  Dr. Deng Zigang writes in his paper, “If the running speed exceeds 400 km (250 miles) per hour, more than 83% of traction energy will dissipate wastefully in air resistance.” A maglev train running in a vacuum would increase its potential top speed and improve its efficiency level. If such a theoretical evacuated tube transport (this concept had been around for over 100 years now) may be successfully designed and built,  people potentially will be able to travel between New York and Beijing in 2 hours!

In one of our previous posts we have also discussed a similar concept, Hyperloop, by Elon Musk, with the added feature of being solar powered and reaching top speed of 760 mph (1,220 km/h).


The beauty of universal collaboration through open-source is such that information in free-flow form, would enable much to be synthesized, exchanged, and edified quickly. Now the scientists and  engineers at Netherland have also taken on the challenge and incorporated the concepts of maglev, evacuated tube, and solar power, working on the Netherland’s Quantum Train (quantum-locking or quantum-levitation). Quantum Train is essentially the solar-powered evacuated tube transport that will be CHEAP, SAFE, FAST, SUSTAINALBE, and GREEN. The future of Quantum Levitation will enable 2 mm thick 3″ diamter superconducting material to carry  approximately 1000 Kg (a small car). The future will be magical ! Many top notched scientists and engineers are working on this at the moment in multiple countries and we are looking forward to the day when Solar Powered Quantum Evacuated Tube Transport/Maglev Train will be transporting us near 1,800 mph on every continent….perhaps even one day transporting us from one continent to another continent in this magical transport system.The world is getting smaller. I am very thankful that we are living in such a magical and collaborative world, full of wonderful scientists and engineers with visions and willingness to collaborate.

The Solar Tsunami WIll Take Powerwall & Powerpack Into An Industry Greater Than $21 Billion !

Many of you may be curious about the first week post-announcement of Powerwall from our May 1, 2015 post. The reception for Tesla’s new batteries has been OVERWHELMING!!! These are how Bloomberg Business breaks down the $800 million of orders:

  • The Powerwall home batteries designed to be paired with rooftop solar systems received 38,000 reservations.
  • Some customers order more than one battery. Average reservation is somewhere from 1.5 to 2 batteries. Musk described the total demand as “more like 50,000 or 60,000” batteries in early reservations.
  • The Powerwall comes in two designs at $3,000 or $3,500 each.
  • Total Powerwall orders so far is $178.8 million.
  • Tesla has received 2,500 reservations for the utility-scaled Powerpack, usually ordered/installed with “at least 10 Powerpacks”…equivalent to  25,000 units totally at 2.5 million kWh.
  • Musk tweeted last week that pricing for the Powerpack is $250 kWh.
  • Total Powerpack orders thus far is: $625 million.


So, Tesla’s grand total for battery reservations during the first week is $803.8 million! They sold out their first year’s production during the first week! It is no wonder they are already considering expanding the gigafactory after just one week!

 


Tesla is currently also working on projects with Target and Amazon and with electric utilities that include Southern California Electric and Texas-based OnCor. It is not only the individual home owners with distributed solar but utilities are also interested in building battery storage. Batteries can replace some peaker plants while strengthening the grid. With the cost of battery now falling as fast as the solar panels, some electricity from your outlet may soon be coming from battery storage. Powerwall & Powerpack, the cost effective battery storage, have now taken care of one of the arguments against solar, its intermittency. We are seeing the effect of first touch down of previously announced Solar Tsunami ! The world will be a cleaner, healthier, and better place, thanks to Elon Musk’s batteries and Solar Tsunami ! Perhaps Elon Musk’s American dream: a chicken in every pot, a Tesla in every garage powered by solar panels in the roof through Powerwall battery, will soon become a reality. Some people in the energy industry forecasted that although  currently $605 million industry, by 2024 it can very well become a $21 billion industry. Of course, many other experts in the field feel that number would be much bigger than $21 billion.

The Necessary Missing Piece Unveiled, Tesla Powerwall & Powerpack, by Elon Musk

The electric enthusiasm is palpable in the auditorium! One can feel the energy is ready to boil over….for this is what we (The World) have all been waiting for, the cost effective battery storage technology that would enable us to truly see the transformation of our world!  Let this very historical date be remembered, Tesla Motors, rather, Elon Musk, announces the arrival of Tesla Powerwall, on April 30, 2015 in LA.

I’ve been following the progress made by Tesla Motors for quite some times for it is critically connected to the future of our Solar Energy. The intermittency  of solar energy depends on the rate of progress or research being made in battery technology in the electric vehicle/auto industry. As Elon refers to the Sun as “this handy fusion reactor in the sky…producing ridiculous amount of power,” he also points out the amount of surface area needed for solar panels to power the entire U.S.A. is rather small (and mostly in solar rooftops). Furthermore, the size of the battery required to transition all of U.S.A. to Solar With Battery would only be 1 pixel…to no longer needing fossil fuel to generate electricity! But there are shortcomings in existing battery technology:

  • expensive
  • unreliable
  • poor integration
  • poor lifetime
  • low efficiency
  • not scalable
  • unattractive

To overcome these shortcomings, Elon unveils for us, on this very memorable day of April 30, 2015, The Tesla Powerwall !  Imagine our future world where batteries would be space-efficient wall-mounted, with a simple and elegant design (choices of colors), with integrated safety systems, thermal control, and dc-dc converter. It would work well with our solar systems. It would enable us to be free from worries about power outage and even potentially go off grid. At the cost of $3,500 (for the 10kWh version and $3,000 for the 7 kWh version)  it is the best affordable safe solution to our energy concern. It is also possible to stack up to 9 Powerwalls together, enabling 90 kWh.  This is a fantastic solution especially for area with intermittent energy source or remote area: residents from these areas would now be able to meet their energy needs through “Solar Panels with Tesla Powerwall” without the need of electricity lines. This will propell the progress of many remote areas.

You can order the Tesla Powerwall now by going to teslaenergy.com  . They will start shipping in about 3-4 months. More will be ramping up next year as the transition will be made into Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada.

Toward the end of the presentation, Elon also brought forth the larger, scalable Powerpack, designed to scale infinitely. An order by a utility for 250 MWh installation (using Powerpack) has already been placed.  For dramatic effect, of course, we’ve been presented with the demonstration in an auditorium that is completely powered by the Sun, with storage by the Tesla Powerwall.

To demonstrate the feasibility of transitioning our world into renewable energy world—100% Solar (primarily)/Wind Energy, Elon has also shown us the data for such transitions:

  • 16,000 GWh from 160 million powerpacks (for U.S.A.)
  • 90,000 GWh from 900 million powerpacks (for the world)..primarily solar
  • 200,000 GWh from 2 billion powerpacks (for all transport, electric generation, and heating included)

THANK YOU, ELON! I’ve known that Solar/Renweable energy is the way to go more than 30 years ago (I’m sure that I was not alone), but it took some one like you to help to show us how it can be done!

THANK YOU, ELON, for making the designs and plans of gigafactory all open source! So, we earthlings will be able to transition quickly!

I am looking forward to the day when CO2 emission will be a thing of the past. Oh, what a clean, efficient, and smart world we will all live in!

Hanergy Charging Toward The Solar Electric Future!

The aggresive Chinese NEA in the previous post has inspired me to have a closer look at some of the current Chinese effort toward solar energy.  Interestingly,  some new development regarding Hanergy Holding getting ready to launch five models of solar-powered cars in October this year got my attention, for I’ve had a history of covering the solar car events since 2011.

Hanergy is a privately held Chinese multinational renewable energy company founded in 1994 by Li Hejun  (its current chairman and CEO). Its headquarter is in Beijing. It is active in solar, wind and hydropower generation and is one of the world’s largest thin-film solar power company. Hanergy was ranked No. 23 in the 2014 list of 50 Smartest Companies by MIT Technology Review, noting “the Chinese energy company is snapping up advanced solar technologies at fire-sale prices.”

As the market share of thin film photovoltaic panels is expected to decline each year to 2017, according to one of the NPD Solarbuzz PV Equipment Quarterly report, it is not surprising that Hanergy has been further exploring and expanding into other clean energy territories such as auto sector.  Considering the fact that transportation vehicle is one of the main contributing factors for CO2 emission and particulates pollution any where on planet earth, Hanergy Holding is likely to continue to have tremendous impact toward cleaning our earthly environment in the future.

Hanergy was on the top of Tesla‘s list of collaborators for the first PV Supercharger station in China. Two solar PV charging systems designed and manufactured by Hanergy Solar Group (at Tesla’s request), were showcased in April, 2014, by Tesla. Finally, some body has taken up on Elon Musk’s offer of Tesla’s patents for free! Plans for Tesla’s supercharger network in China will continue to roll out in large cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. Tesla’s founder Elon Musk said: “In the future, Tesla will work with partners to build supercharger network. The first charging station in Beijing was built in cooperation with Hanergy Solar Group. Tesla will continue to invest in the construction of superchargers in China, aiming to quickly expand the network.” Elon Musk also noted that large investments will be brought into China for the building of seven Supercharger networks.

The two solar PV charging systems showcased were somewhat different, as indicated in the press release at the time, below (in italics):

The Beijing carport, a mobile carport designed to be assembled and transported, adopts Hanergy’s GSE flexible thin-film solar modules. The Shanghai carport will be a fixed structure, and adopts Hanergy’s MiaSole CIGS high-efficiency modules. The first phase of both carports has been completed.

The PV charging system by Hanergy Solar Group protects vehicles like ordinary carports, while (at the same time) converting sunlight into electricity (via) its solar rooftop. At the same time, the system charges the electric vehicle through its energy storage system. The system uses the CIGS thin-film PV technology, the most advanced in the world. With conversion rates peaking at 20.5%, this technology offers light weight, flexibility, excellent low-light performance and advanced packaging. More importantly, no fixed column is required, which significantly reduces the cost.

Vice President of Hanergy Global Solar Power and Application Group, Ms. Zhang Qingliang, stated: “Hanergy has been actively exploring ways to utilize its thin-film photovoltaic technology to provide solutions through technological innovation and cross industrial integration. We have been working with multiple domestic and foreign automobile manufacturers to integrate solar, and is also researching on energy storage, photovoltaic car roof and other solar-automobile applications.”

As Hanergy continues working with three domestic and two foreign companies on solar powered cars, it will be interesting for us to keep our eyes on what 5-models of solar cars that will be unveiled in October of 2015.  With an earthly population of over one billion people, China will provide a huge potential market for future solar cars. The collaboration between Hanergy and Tesla in solar electric cars and supercharging stations will bring forth not only the vehicle of Solar Energy Age, Cleaner Environment, but an important appreciation for multinational collaboration.  This is truly the kind of success through Harmonious Collaboration that our planet needs more of on our way toward a brighter, healthier, and better world.

Solar City Teaming Up With Tesla

In a recent report on Solar City teaming up with Tesla, Solar City will use Tesla’s batteries for energy storage. This fast-growing solar installer, Solar City, has found a solution to energy storage issue while reducing energy cost and demand cost. Called DemandLogic, it could allow businesses to use stored electricity in times of peak demand, reducing their usage at peak periods and the associated fees (called the demand charges). Lyndon Rive (cousin of Elon Musk, chairman of Solar City), Solar City’s chief executive, said that the systems would provide backup power and a working solar array during blackouts. Mr. Rive also added that he does not see the systems as a step toward independence from the grid, although storage is very important in maintaining grid stability as more customers continue to adopt solar.

Based on a $1.8 million grant in 2010 from the California Public Utilities Commission to study the possibilities of storing electricity from rooftop solar arrays in batteries, the product was developed. The company has also signed up approximately 300 of its residential customers for a pilot program using battery packs from Tesla (where Elon Musk, cousin of Lyndon Rive, is the chief executive of Tesla and chairman of the Solar City, as indicated in our post/video of Dec. 11, 2013). The company will offer its storage systems in parts of California, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

“It’s not a no-brainer-you still have to have the  right combinations of rates and demand charges and the cost of the equipment.But if the systems are able to take advantage of a 30% federal tax credit, the economics would have broader appeal.” according to a senior research analyst at Navigant Research.

The new customers at Solar City systems signing 10-year service agreements are eligible for the credit. The Solar City systems are made to store about a third of the energy the solar array can produce. Mr. Rive guarantees that there would be reductions of demand charge, at about 20%. Part of the appeal is that the system allows businesses to continue operating at full capacity, rather than reducing power usage, as in traditional demand response program.
