began, having gotten their solar cars to Darwin only to be faced with the reality of not being able to compete. For others the strong wind gusts, dust storms, rolling spinifex and sheer distance proved too much.  Regardless of their placing, all teams had reason to celebrate their achievements and were given a rousing reception and their moment in the sun on the official finish line at Hindmarsh Square in Adelaide.  In the Challenger class, Onda Solare from Italy in their solar car Emilia 3,

made the 3020 kilometres under solar power for the first time crossing the finish line at 4.25 pm on Friday putting them into the top ten. In the Adventure Class, Team Antakari from Chile also made the distance under

full solar power crossing at 9.31am Saturday morning which put them in second place in their class.  With 22 countries competing in Australia for the event, the Challenge welcomed first timers: China, Sweden, Indonesia, and Colombia.

China’s entrant from the Beijing Institute of Technology, Sun Shuttle, was welcomed into Adelaide today, having recorded 1398 solar kilometres. Colombia’s Universidad EAFIT Empress Publicas de Medelin, in their solar car Primavera, recorded 2505 solar kilometres; The Jonkoping University team from Sweden in their solar car, Natural Magic Energy, struck difficulties in the windy conditions, despite their damaged car they managed to record 1301 solar kilometres; and the team from Indonesia’s Intitut Teknologi Sepuluh Surabaya in their solar car Sapu Angin Surya drove 748 kilometres under solar power.  Event Director Chris Selwood congratulated all the teams saying the spirit of competition is just as important as the result.  “This is a truly unique event that brings people from diverse backgrounds and cultures together across the Australian outback. I look forward to our final day tomorrow, with our first ever street parade from 2pm followed by the Awards Ceremony and the announcement of the inaugural Cruiser Class winner,” he said.

For Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, activities at Hindmarsh Square will include:

  1. 38 solar car teams from 22 countries
  2. Hire a free Adelaide City Bike
  3. Adelaide Clean Drive – free test drive – some of the latest lowest emission production cars through the city streets
  4. Feast on Fork on the Road, from 12noon Sunday
  5. The world’s first solar car street parade, from 2pm Sunday starting in Hindmarsh Square and travelling through the city streets to Edwards park.

PROVISIONAL RESULTS DAY 1 of World Solar Challenge 2013

Thanks! sunisthefuture-Susan Sun Nunamaker _______________________________________________________________________________________ There has been much coverage on the European Commission planning to impose between 37.2% and 67.9% tariffs on Chinese solar module manufacturers which if approved, will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union in June and come into provisional effect. In the meantime, there are talks of potential retaliation from China over EU solar PV tariffs and more than 1,000 firms demanding an end to EU-China solar PV trade war.

My thoughts on the subject matter: we are living in a time of transition heading toward infinity. It is necessary for EU and China both to realize that there is much to be gained from collaborations and playing the Game of Infinity rather than Zero Sum Game. If there will be greater demand, there would not be any need for anti-dumping tariffs. Then, how about concentrating on collaborating effort to expand the demand for solar PV throughout our planet earth rather than deterring one another from expansion? Our planet needs all of us to play a positive role in assisting with the move toward renewable energy age, if we’d like to see our future generations to have any decent chance of having a clean, healthy, war-free and sustainable world. I am doing my part in gathering signatures to ask Florida legislators and governor to consider implementing Solar-FIT (Feed-In-Tariff),  what will those of you in solar industry in EU and China do? Similar discussions occurred earlier between U.S. and China, covered by Sun Is The Future (in the two links below):

To my fellow solar enthusiasts who are able to attend the Global Solar Summit 2013, wishing you all a terrific time in the beautiful Milan! I am not able to attend in the last minute due to my mother’s driving and health. She is a spunky lady who treasures her sense of independence and autonomy…but the aging process is stealthily catching up…her reflex is not what it used to be. So after her most recent auto incident, she was quite shaken up and may take a few weeks to recover. Since I will not be able to attend this historic/first Global Solar Summit, I will appreciate any photos or videos or recordings of interviews any of you may be able to share via sunisthefuture@gmail.com. I am also ecstatic to find out that Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk is talking to Google about adding driverless technology to its electric cars (according to Bloomberg). Elon Musk said technologies that can take over for drivers are a logical step in the evolution of cars. “I like the word autopilot more than I like the word self-driving,” Musk said in an interview. “Self-driving sounds like it’s going to do something you don’t want it to do. Autopilot is a good thing to have in planes, and we should have it in cars.” Let’s go on a test drive with this driverless/autopilot vehicle, below:

Google’s approach builds on a push for the driverless-car technology long pursued by the U.S. military’s DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), which held vehicle competitions for carmakers and research labs. Anthony Levandowski, product manager for Google’s self-driving car project, has said the company expects to release the technology within five years.

“The problem with Google’s current approach is that the sensor system is too expensive,” Musk said. “It’s better to have an optical system, basically cameras with software that is able to figure out what’s going on just by looking at things.”

I have no doubt that Elon Musk and his team will figure out a way to bring down the cost for driverless/autopilot car in the future. I would also like to add: Mr. Musk, might you try to find a way to put some solar cells on top of these autopilot/driverless vehicles? I would be in cloud nine if autopilot solar cars will be commercially available within the next five years. What a wonderful world this would be !

President & CEO of SEPA, Julia Hamm, Shed Some Light For Our Solar Future

Today I want to share an interview with you, of Julia Hamm, President and CEO of SEPA (Solar Electric Power Association), at Pennsylvania Convention Center of Phildadelphia, PA, on Thursday, February 7, 2013, below:

During the interview, President Hamm re-emphasized the importance of collaboration between utility companies and consumers during this time of transition. She’s been with SEPA since 1992 when the organization was Utility Photovoltaic Group (renamed as SEPA in 2000), left and rejoined the organization in 2004. The focus of SEPA has been to help the traditional utility sector to integrate more solar into their energy portfolio through education, research, programs and projects that enable better understanding and learning of mutual experience from various utility companies. The emphasis is in creating a bridge between the utility companies and solar industry. SEPA has been instrumental in bringing various US utility companies abroad, since 2008, to learn how utility companies have been able to adapt to greater solar penetration in other countries such as Germany, Spain, Japan, and Italy. SEPA and SEIA co-own SPI (Solar Power International, ) and recently SPI formed an alliance with Solar Expo show (SES, May 8-10, 2013 in Milan, Italy) and Shanghai New Energy Conference (SNEC PV Power Expo, May 14-16, 2013, Shanghai, China). These three largest solar trade shows (SPI, SES, SNEC) in the world come together to form the Global Solar Alliance and will be hosting the Global Solar Summit in the coming Spring in Milan, Italy, to provide better exchange of information and communications among utility companies internationally.

Julia Hamm foresees continued growth of solar industry and greater use/adoption of solar by consumers;this will translate into need for future change in regulatory structures in order to fulfill the need of consumers and utility companies. Such change in regulatory structure will be occurring on state by state basis. With distributed PV (and other sources) quickly being adopted by consumers, utility companies now realize the need for changing the nature of the grid. Time and collaboration are the keys. It would appear that better chance of success in bringing about any regulatory improvement/changes that will benefit both consumers and utility companies is through collaboration.  So, it’s time for all parties involved to sit down at the round table and work out the details collaboratively, for our mutual benefit.

Incentive For Solar (8)-Feed-In-Tariff

Sorry about the delay of this week’s postings…I tend to procrastinate when the issue seems to carry more weight in my heart…for I sincerely believe the thorough implementation of optimal Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) for solar and all other renewable energies have the potential of accelerating our transition into renewable energy era at such an incredibly tremendous pace that it will help to bring down the cost of solar technology like you won’t believe! It had both perplexed and troubled me how snail- paced Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) had been spreading/implementing within US, considering the fact that the first form of feed-in-tariff was actually implemented in US in 1978, under President Jimmy Carter’s administration, telling Americans that the energy crisis was a “clear and present danger to our nation” and drew out a plan to address it. Thirty-three years later, here we are now, in 2011, when feed-in-tariff had been enacted in more than sixty four other countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Iran, Republic of Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Republic of Korea, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, UK, while only about a dozen states in the United States, have implemented this fantastic policy mechanism designed to encourage the adoption of renewable energy sources and to help accelerate the move toward grid parity (grid parity is the point at which alternative means of generating electricity is at least as cheap as grid power.)

Put it simply, Feed-In-Tariff is an incentive policy that requires the power company to buy renewable energy from any one who produces it. No matter how small the producer is, the power company has to buy the renewable energy from the producer. Different tariff rates are set for different renewable energy technologies, linked to the cost of resource development in each case.  Typically, FITs include three key provisions:

  • guaranteed grid access
  • long-term contracts (often 15-25 years) for the electricity produced
  • purchase prices that are based on the cost of renewable energy generation and tend towards grid parity

The cost based prices therefore enable a diversity of projects (wind, solar, etc.) to be developed while investors can obtain a reasonable return on renewable energy investments.  This principle was first explained in Germany’s 2000 RES Act:

“The compensation rates…have been determined by means of scientific studies, subject to the provision that the rates identified should make it possible for an installation – when managed efficiently – to be operated cost-effectively, based on the use of state-of-art technology and depending on the renewable energy sources naturally available in a given geographical environment.” (RES Act 2000, Explanatory Memorandum A)

In 2008,  the European Commission concluded that well-adapted feed-in-tariff regimes are generally the most efficient and effective support schemes for promoting renewable electricity.  This conclusion is also supported by International Energy Agency, the European Federation for Renewable Energy, and Deutsche Bank.

Countries with the best policies (such as Feed-In-Tariff) tend to be able to attract more investments and ultimately leading to better local economy and job opportunities. It does appear to me, that if US would be able to implement Feed-In-Tariff effectively, there would be a better chance for US to regain its leadership position in renewable energy world.
