Solar Powered Maglev/Evacuated Tube Transport For Our Magical Planet Earth

Wow, we are surely living in a magical time! Another form of upcoming mass transport is based on the magical Maglev (derived from magnetic levitation) with upgrade.   It is a transport method that uses magnetic levitation to move vehicles without touching the ground. A vehicle would travel along a guideway using magnets to create both lift and propulsion, thereby reducing friction and allowing higher speed. Here is a TED Talk that demonstrates this concept, below:


Of  course, such a magical technology would have many potential applications;for example: the Shanghai Maglev Train, also known as the Transrapid, is the fastest commercial train currently in operation and has a top speed of 430 km/h (270 mph) (and once reached 311 mph or 501 km/h in a pre-launch test). The line was designed to connect Shanghai Pudong International Airport and the outskirts of central Pudong, Shanghai. It covers a distance of 30.5 kilometres in 8 minutes.

Maglev trains move more smoothly and more quietly than wheeled mass transit systems. They are relatively unaffected by weather. The power needed for levitation is typically not a large percentage of its overall energy consumption; most goes to overcome drag, as with other high-speed transport. Maglev trains hold the speed record for rail transport. Vacuum tube train systems might allow maglev trains to attain still higher speeds, though no such vacuum tubes have been built commercially yet.

Compared to conventional (normal) trains, differences in construction affect the economics of maglev trains, making them much more efficient. For high-speed trains with wheels, wear and tear from friction along with the “hammer effect” from wheels on rails accelerates equipment wear and prevents high speeds. Conversely, maglev systems have been much more expensive to construct, offsetting lower maintenance costs. Despite decades of research and development, only two commercial maglev transport systems are in operation, with two others under construction. In April 2004, Shanghai’s Transrapid system began commercial operations. In March 2005, Japan began operation of its relatively low-speed HSST “Linimo” line in time for the 2005 World Expo.

In its first three months, the Linimo line carried over 10 million passengers. South Korea and the People’s Republic of China are both building low-speed maglev routes of their own designs, one in Beijing and the other at Seoul’s Incheon Airport. Many maglev projects are controversial, and the technological potential, adoption prospects and economics of maglev systems are often debated.

Even though no commercial vacuum tube train systems have been built yet, scientists at Southwest Jiaotong University in China have reportedly built a maglev train that could reach 1,800 mph (2,900 km/h). A vacuum is used to minimize air resistance, according to The Daily Mail.Dr. Deng Zigang, the project leader, claims such vacuum tube train systems could be used for military or space launch systems. At the high speed of maglev train system, air resistance becomes a serious issue.  Dr. Deng Zigang writes in his paper, “If the running speed exceeds 400 km (250 miles) per hour, more than 83% of traction energy will dissipate wastefully in air resistance.” A maglev train running in a vacuum would increase its potential top speed and improve its efficiency level. If such a theoretical evacuated tube transport (this concept had been around for over 100 years now) may be successfully designed and built,  people potentially will be able to travel between New York and Beijing in 2 hours!

In one of our previous posts we have also discussed a similar concept, Hyperloop, by Elon Musk, with the added feature of being solar powered and reaching top speed of 760 mph (1,220 km/h).


The beauty of universal collaboration through open-source is such that information in free-flow form, would enable much to be synthesized, exchanged, and edified quickly. Now the scientists and  engineers at Netherland have also taken on the challenge and incorporated the concepts of maglev, evacuated tube, and solar power, working on the Netherland’s Quantum Train (quantum-locking or quantum-levitation). Quantum Train is essentially the solar-powered evacuated tube transport that will be CHEAP, SAFE, FAST, SUSTAINALBE, and GREEN. The future of Quantum Levitation will enable 2 mm thick 3″ diamter superconducting material to carry  approximately 1000 Kg (a small car). The future will be magical ! Many top notched scientists and engineers are working on this at the moment in multiple countries and we are looking forward to the day when Solar Powered Quantum Evacuated Tube Transport/Maglev Train will be transporting us near 1,800 mph on every continent….perhaps even one day transporting us from one continent to another continent in this magical transport system.The world is getting smaller. I am very thankful that we are living in such a magical and collaborative world, full of wonderful scientists and engineers with visions and willingness to collaborate.

ReVolt House of TU Delft at Solar Decathlon Europe 2012

Another intriguing design at Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 awaits you!  This particular design, ReVolt House,  is created by students of the Technical University of Delft of the Netherland.  Considering how prevalent water is throughout the densely populated Netherland, its national concern for potential failure of its dikes, added to climate change,  it is no wonder that the design from a Netherland university  is combining floatation and rotation, offering a unique floating solar home solution, joining aspects of energy production, sustainability, adaptability, and life style.  The ReVolt House consists of three living zones (zones for sleeping, dining, and living), grouped in circular open floor layout, in response to the rotation of the house. The primary spaces revolve around a centrally located aesthetic bathing space. Each of these spaces has a technical  area associated with it (kitchen-dining area; home entertainment-living area;toilet-sleeping area).  During summer, the closed facade is facing the sun, preventing the interior from heating up.  During winter, the large glazed facade is constantly facing the sun, insuring sufficient amount of daylight for the interior as well as passive heat gains.  Throughout the day, the ReVolt House would rotate to frame the view of different landscape features.  By interlinking the inhabitants’ daily and seasonal natural cycles, the quality of living space is dramatically improved.  Sleeping area is designed to be flexible, easily accommodating different events.  Electricity and hot water are generated by the solar collectors on the roof.  Rainwater are collected at the bottom of the storage tank for future use.  The facade facing the sun heats up, causing stack effect, drawing air via ducts through the building. Water sprayed into the duct system. Evaporation causes cooling in the interior.  Let’s take a look at this unique design, below:

Unfortunately, this particular design did not make it to Madrid, Spain for the competition…perhaps another year…but it certainly is a unique design that may answer much of the concern for residents in Netherland.

On Friday of Oct. 21, 2011, around 10:15 A.M., the enthusiastic crowd waited for arrival of Nuna 6 of Nuon Solar Team (Netherland) and Quantum of University of Michigan (USA), at the Victoria Square of Adelaide, Australia.  As Nuna 6 was seen coming down King William St., gradually approaching Victoria Square, the crowd no longer contains themselves and started banging on the plastic advertising bulletins… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdNZei5kJmwfor they knew that Nuna 6 and Quantum had already arrived at the official finish line, Angle Vale, the day before at 2:12 P.M. and 3:55 P.M., respectively, but decided to reach for the ceremonial finish line, Victoria Square, today (Oct. 21, 2011).

As Nuna 6 lands on the equivalent of its red carpet, but dark grey in this case,  reporting crews and the crowd swarms toward this marvelous solar vehicle of reliability and efficiency.  Every step of its progression reflects its vision of teamwork, from its supporting members carrying and laying down the flag of Netherland on the hood of this winning car, to the hugs and handshakes fellow team members giving to one another.  Then came the Champaign and Ritual Dip in the Victoria Fountain. One gesture was out of the ordinary: that the Nuna 6  and Tokai Challenger 2 members started to exchange their shirts in the Victoria Fountain, symbolizing either that “we’re in this together” or “we’re all winners”.  So in some of the video and photos one would find Nuon Solar Team members wearing Tokai’s blue and Tokai Challenger 2 Team members wearing Nuna’s orange.

One thing to be certain, they were all having a great deal of fun, as evidenced in these photos. I also have uploaded an interview with one of the Nuna 6 team members/drivers above.

Victoria Square is a public square in the South Australian capital of Adelaide. The square is in the centre of the city’s grid of one square mile, and was named by the Street Naming Committee on 23 May 1837 afterPrincess Victoria, heir presumptive of the British throne. A statue of Queen Victoria stands in the center of the square. The fountain in the north of the square was designed by artist John Dowie to represent the three rivers from which Adelaide receives most of its water—the Torrens, the Onkaparinga and the Murray.

Victoria Square is bordered by numerous public institutions, including the Supreme Court of South Australia, the Adelaide Magistrate’s Court, the Federal Court of Australia, theTreasury and the AdelaideGeneral Post Office. On the eastern side is the Roman Catholic Cathedral Church of St Francis Xavier and the SA WaterHeadquarters. The Torrens Building, home to a number of community organisations, is now also used by the Heinz College Australia, an international campus of Carnegie Mellon University. TheAdelaide Central Market is located to the west of the Square.

King William Street passes through the square making a diamond shape with the southbound carriageway passing through the east side, and the northbound carriageway passing through the west side of the square. The square is bisected by a piece of road (technically part of the square) that connects Wakefield Street(entering from the east) with Grote Street (to the west). A tram stop (formerly the terminus) for the Glenelg Tram is in the southern part of the square; it was shifted from the center to the western edge of the square on 6 August 2007, as part of the extension that was made to the tram line around that time.
