I’ve been away for quite a while. But this event definitely needs to be shared, despite how busy life may get. Even though the focus of Sun Is The Future is to promote, educate, and share information regarding solar energy, please do keep in mind that the transition into use of solar energy would help to reduce pollution, solve energy problem, slow down climate change, eliminate international conflicts, and generate local jobs and economy.

This may seem to be the worst of times, but it holds the promise of a future for the best of times….on this eve of the COP 21 climate talks (when leaders of nearly 200 countries will be joining for a global conference on climate change in Paris), climate activists and Parisians once again stepped up with creativity, in Place de Republique, to demonstrate not only to those in the City of the Light, but also to all of those around the world: placing about 20,000 pairs of shoes as a symbol of the poignant “silent march,” after being told by French authorities that they couldn’t march in Paris. This is a way of symbolically and powerfully joining the climate march and each pair of shoes shows the determination of Parisians to have their voices heard on climate change,” said Iain Keith of Avaaz, which helped plan the action. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon dropped off a pair of his running shoes, saying, “As the world gathers in Paris to stand up for climate action, let us also stand in the shoes of all victims of terrorism, war and persecution and respond with compassion.” Pope Francis sent along a pair of shoes to be placed on his behalf.

When the clock struck noon in Paris today (Nov. 29, 2015), thousands of Parisians and activists joined hands to form a human chain down Boulevard Voltaire, starting from Place de Republique, passing the Bataclan Theater (where most of the lives were taken during the tragic attacks of November 13th), and down to Place de la Nation. At the Bataclan, participants left a 100-meter gap for the memorials that line the sidewalks. Nearly 10,000 people participated in this human chain, according to Agence France Presse.

We joined hands today against climate change and violence,” said Hoda Baraka, Global Communications Manager for 350.org. “People here in Paris, and hundreds of thousands who are taking part in climate marches worldwide, have a clear message for world leaders: keep fossil fuels in the ground and finance a just transition to 100% renewable energy.” In London an estimated 50,000 showed up. In Belfast and Berlin and Barcelona, climate activists took to the streets. Here in the United States, climate marches are underway in New York and Nashville, in Louisville and (later today) in Los Angeles. In Bargny, Senegal, demonstrators flowed through the streets. Please allow me to share some of the images by 350.org of marches (Global Climate March) that broke out in Africa, Asia, Australia, Middle East, Europe, and North and South America.

Ideal Power’s 2-Port & 3-Port Hybrid Converters at InterSolar North America 2014

Share

Dear Friends, Visitors/Viewers/Readers,

(Please click on red links and note magenta)

I’d like to share with you an interview at InterSolar North America 2014, in Moscone Center of San Francisco, CA on July 9, 2014. The future of the multi-billion dollar solar industry depends much on the progress in combining PV with energy storage. In this post, Sun Is The Future will present to you Ideal Power’s AWARD winning 30KW Hybrid PV Storage Converter (which is becoming the de facto industry standard to enable PV+storage integration). Ideal Power received its award on June 4th during a ceremony at InterSolar Europe in Munich, Germany, the world’s largest exhibition for the solar industry. Ideal Power’s technology stood out due to its ability to combine PV and battery systems with an efficiency level of up to 97%. It also provides modular flexibility for different applications, particularly in off-grid systems. Due to the dramatic improvement in size, weight, cost, and efficiency over conventional converters, the Hybrid Converter integrates multiple power sources (i.e. PV+storage+grid) to lower the cost of delivering grid resiliency during blackouts such as Superstorm Sandy. I can’t wait to get my hands on the 3-port Hybrid Inverter/Converter (125 lbs) that will enable us to be better prepared for future natural disasters without the dependence on the grid. Currently the 2-port converter system (100 lbs) is used for demand reduction in grid-tied system (currently used in Walgreen of  Southern CA) whereas the 3-port converter will be in one box and creates its own microgrid during power outage.

Below, is an interview with John Merritt, Director of Applications Engineering, of Ideal Power, at InterSolar North America 2014:

Ideal Power’s hybrid converter is the first 3-port product to leverage the Company’s Power Packet Switching Architecture™ (PPSA), which allows it to combine PV inverter capabilities on one DC port, bi-directional battery converter capabilities on the second DC port, and provide an AC port supporting both grid-tied and off-grid applications. It can accomplish these functions with only a modest increase in product size and weight over its established 2-port battery converter and PV inverter products and with no loss of system efficiency. Conventional technology solutions to hybrid power conversion systems combining PV and storage require multiple power conversion steps, thereby reducing efficiency, and multiple power converter units, increasing size, weight and cost. (Ideal Power press release)

CITEL TO EXHIBIT 2016-READY SPD’S AT INTERSOLAR NORTH AMERICA 2014

Share

Dear Friends, Visitors/Viewers/Readers,

(Please click on red links below and note magenta)

Below is the press release from one of the presenters at InterSolar North America in San Francisco, CA in July 8-10, 2014.

CITEL TO EXHIBIT 2016-READY SPD’S AT INTERSOLAR NORTH AMERICA 2014

Miramar, FL – May, 2014 – CITEL, the leader in photovoltaic surge protective devices, is excited to announce that their 2016-ready SPD’s will be featured at Intersolar North America this July. “We are excited to show the solar community our surge protective devices at Intersolar 2014.” said Patrick Coyle, VP of CITEL, “Our SPD’s have been specifically engineered to meet the protection needs of PV systems and ready for the UL updates in 2016.” CITEL continues to lead the way in the solar industry by developing innovative surge protection solutions specifically for photovoltaic applications now reaching up to 1500 vdc.

By their remote nature, Photovoltaic (PV) systems are highly exposed and vulnerable to lightning induced power surges. A PV system that is not equipped with surge protection can be severely damaged or even destroyed in the case of an over voltage such as one that would be caused by a lightning strike. Not only are the panels themselves targets for lightning, so are inverters, combiner boxes, feeder lines, structural supports, and even data lines throughout the system. The risk is so high that international standards have been written specifying the type and locations of SPD’s in a PV installation. A full surge risk assessment is an important step when installing a PV system, in order to identify any safety requirements.

Surge protective devices are essential in order to achieve the ROI that fully operating PV systems are designed to provide. SPD’s provide reassurance that the system will be protected in the lightning-prone environment in which it is placed, thus protecting the investment and avoiding costly downtime, repairs, and replacements. It is essential that anybody considering a PV installation also incorporates the protection of an SPD.

Some of CITEL’s surge protective devices that will be displayed at Intersolar North America are:
 DS60VGPV – UL Type 1 CA DC SPD’s
 DS50VGPV – UL Type 1 CA DC SPD’s
 DS50PVS – UL Type 1 CA DC SPD’s
 DS2x0S-xxDC – Type 2 DC or AC SPD’s
The DS60 and DS50 family of SPD’s are also 2016-ready. By 2016, all UL1449 3rd Edition SPD’s will be required to test and publish a short circuit current rating (SCCR) and pass the intermediate current tests in order to comply with more stringent SPD component assembly standard. The DS60 and DS50 products also have the option to feature CITEL’s patented VG Technology. VG Technology provides the key benefits of increased life expectancy, elimination of leakage current, elimination of working current, and will meet the most stringent UL standards with no conditions of acceptability.
CITEL is proud to have the opportunity to exhibit at Intersolar North America 2014 and to share about the necessity of surge protection in photovoltaic systems as well as the upcoming changes to UL. Please stop by booth 8638 to visit CITEL and learn more! About CITEL: Since 1937, CITEL has manufactured a complete line of surge protective devices to protect sensitive equipment from the harmful effects of lightning strikes and other line disturbances.
