Just weeks after our previous reporting of Tesla/Solar City’s Solar roof, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that their Tesla/Solar City solar roof will be cheaper than the conventional/traditional roofing material. Previously Elon Musk said their solar roof would be cheaper, when taking into consideration of the fact that power would be generated from these solar roofs. But now he believes that the cost of manufacturing and installing their solar roofs will be less than the traditional roofs even before taking into consideration of its power generation. Solar City is the largest solar manufacturer and installer in USA. In November of this year, the share holders approved the merger of Tesla and Solar City. Tesla’s solar roofs are expected to hit the market in Summer of 2017.

It’s a no brainer: Tesla/Solar City solar roofs will cost lower, are stronger and last longer, better insulated, and generate power! So when it’s time for you to replace your existing roof or building your roof for the first time, think about Tesla-Solar City Solar Roof!!!

Talk about revolution! Elon Musk continues to lead the charge of this revolution for our Renewable Future!

Instead of the conventional 25-year roof, how would you like to install solar roofs that would effectively cost less, better insulation, last almost 75 years for your house, with more appealing styles to choose from, no less?! Yesterday, the unveiling of  Tesla’s new Solar Roof took place at the Desperate Housewives set in LA, CA. The original roof had been replaced by solar roof tops (photos above)! Can you really tell that these are solar roof tops if I didn’t mention it in advance?

Our WonderWorker Elon Musk continues to amaze us! When I first heard  the news about Tesla may be acquiring Solar City, I suspected that Elon is cooking something in that genius kitchen of his…..behold! We are all totally ecstatic yesterday, upon receiving the news about Tesla’s new Solar Roof and his presentation about the three critical components in accelerating our transition toward the sustainable future: Generation-Storage-Transport—–>Solar Roof-Battery-EV —-> Solar Roof-Tesla’s Powerwall 2-Tesla’s EV. I did not write Tesla’s Solar Roof-Tesla’s Powerwall 2-Tesla’s EV because the vote regarding the acquisition is on November 17, not yet a fait accompli. Personally, I believe it would be a wise step for Solar City to take, to become part of Elon Musk’s  Solution To The Energy Equation. There will be a lot of individuals, families, groups, businesses that will want to take part in solving the global warming problem and in reducing CO2 emission. Furthermore, for those who want to drive an EV, one expects that they are also more likely to also want to install solar roof tops and vise versa.

Elon also pointed out that the future is bright for both utilities and local power generation (solar roof tops) because as we transition our energy use into all electric, that will roughly triple the electricity that will be needed.

In Elon’s presentation of a beautiful, affordable, and seamlessly integrated future: EV(electric vehicle)+Powerwall+Solar Roof awaits us, shown below:

For all the solar installers out there, it might be a good idea to devote part of your business to subcontract for Tesla/Solar City, because this integrated solar roof will probably be proprietary in the next few years.

We Look Forward To Our Renewable/Solar Future!

As one of the audience at the unveiling shouted out, “Elon, Save Us!”

Elon, now help us to get the solar self-driving car !

Time To Evolve Energy Policy For Nevada

Share

Dear Friends, Visitors/Viewers/Readers,

President Barack Obama delivers remarks on energy after a tour of a Solar Panel Field at the Copper Mountain Solar 1 Facility, the largest photovoltaic plant operating in the country with nearly one million solar panels powering 17,000 homes, in Boulder City, Nevada, March 21, 2012. (Official White House Photo by Lawrence Jackson)

(Please click on red for more, below)

Yes, I’m well aware of what’s been happening in Nevada and can fully appreciate the frustration of solar folks out there. But I waited because I wanted to see the reaction of people from Nevada. I trust that there are sufficient number of people all over the country now who are in support of a clean environment and renewable future that there would be plenty of reactions about the recent decision of Nevada PUC (Public Utility Commission, the regulatory body that sets rules for the state’s electricity, gas, and water utilities). What I do not understand is how Nevada PUC reached the decision to cut net metering rates and increase the residential PV owner rate ($40 per month) payable to the state utility, NV Energy. Does Nevada PUC realize that such an attempt to stifle solar energy industry in the short term may actually speed up the rate of destruction of NV Energy in the long run? Or perhaps Nevada PUC simply does not understand sufficiently the overall changing landscape of energy use to propose more effective measures to adapt to the changing need.

The signs and shouts of “Don’t tax the sun!”, “Sandoval stole my sunshine!“,”Solar lives matter!” of hundreds of residents of Las Vegas were heard throughout the country! Those angry protestors outside of the Nevada’s PUC were led by celebrity actor Mark Ruffalo, who shouted, “Let’s make life uncomfortable for them, for the Governor, for the PUC. Because they’re wrong!”

Here is the response from one of the Nevada residents to Governor Brian Sandoval and the Nevada PUC about the recent Nevada Solar ruling, below:

The new fee of $40 per month won’t only apply to new solar customers, but also to the 12,000 or so people who already own solar panels. As a result of this  new decision, selling solar in Nevada will no longer make economic sense for solar installer such as Solar City, cutting 550 jobs from Nevada to be relocated to more solar-friendly states during the first week of January this year. Other solar installers such as Vivint Solar have similar plans, which will translate into loss of thousands of jobs from state of Nevada if such a poor decision is not remedied or reversed. Sunrun even filed an open records request for communication between NV Energy employees, lobbyists, Gov. Sandoval and his staff, and current PUC Chairman Paul Thomsen.  After Sunrun’s request was refused, Sunrun sued Sandoval.

I believe in order for all of us, the energy consumers as well as the power generators, to evolve during this period of transition, we all need to learn, collaborate effectively, and be willing to evolve to the next stage of human history. I believe what we need is better understanding of feed-in-tariff at Value of Solar. In order to be able to step into the next stage of the game and be fair to all parties involved and/or be able to establish stability in our grid or potential future microgrids, I’d like to offer some information and words of wisdom by those who have already put much time and energy into studying the energy generation and management issues. Please allow me to share what Karl Rabago and Toby D. Couture have concluded,  below:

    1. Discussion of the Importance of Value of Solar with Karl Rabago

    1. Expanded Discussion on Value of Solar
    2. Words of Wisdom/Reminder From Our Value of Solar Friend, Karl Rabago
    3. In-Depth Analysis of Renewable Energy Policy With Toby D. Couture

Much remains to be seen and learned before Nevada PUC regulators’ next hearing on February 8, 2016. I hope they will make attempt in consulting Karl Rabago and/or Toby D. Couture before the next hearing.

Hurray For Kaua’i & KIUC-part I

Share

Dear Friends, Visitors/Viewers/Readers,

KIUC (Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative)'s 12 MW solar panels on the day of the dedication, Sep. 25, 2014

(Please click on red links and note magenta)
It is with tremendous awe and admiration that Sun Is The Future team took the trip and video recorded the Koloa Solar Dedication ceremony at Kauai, HI, on September 25, 2014. We found out that by Jan. of 2015, 80% of the peak daytime power demand at Kaua’i will be met by  solar energy and 22% of the daily average will be met by renewable energy. KIUC (Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative) is definitely leading the way on planet earth in our transition toward Renewable Energy Age! This is especially  impressive given the fact that Hawaii is the most fossil fuel dependent state in USA. Realizing that 50% of its total economy comes from tourism and military and the finite nature of fossil fuel, Hawaii actively tries to relieve its dependence from oil so to be less vulnerable to the fluctuation in oil prices and availability. This is mainly accomplished through various goals and roadmaps set by Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative.

During the dedication ceremony, Allan A. Smith (Chairman of the Board of KIUC) welcomed every one. Then remarks were made by:David Bissell (President and CEO of KIUC), Tulsi Gabbard (U.S. House of Representatives), Bernard Carvalho Jr. (Mayor of County of Kaua’i), Hermina Morita (Chair of Hawai’i Public Utility Commission), Sheldon Petersen (CEO of National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation), Peter Rive (Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of SolarCity), Mike Gabbard (Hawai’i State Senate), Wanda Kau-Shibata (Kaua’i Representative), and Gov. Neil Abercrombie.  Dedication and blessing was made by Kuma Sabra Kauka. It is easy to see the love, respect, care, and reverence the people of Kaua’l have for their land, resources, and energy.

This 12 MW, $40 million solar array project is the largest solar array in HI. Contractor is Solar City and Landowner is Grove Farm. It contains 45,360 panels and started in Nov., 2013. The project will displace 1.7 million gallons of oil annually, eliminate 35,000 tons of emissions annually, and will generate enough energy to power 4,000 homes. It is a key part of KIUC’s strategy to use renewable resources to generate at least 50% of the island’s energy by 2023. KIUC is also making sure that there is a diverse portfolio of renewable energy, utilizing not just the solar power, but also wind- , biomass, and hydro- power.

It is wonderful to see Senator Mike Gabbard’s of Hawaii (Chairman of the U.S. Senate Energy & Environment Committee for the past six years)’s excitement for this solar installation. It is understandable how Kaua’i and state of HI are able to arrive at the Solar Heaven ahead of all other states, surpassing its Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative of 2008 (goal of achieving 70% clean energy by 2030 with 30% from efficiency measures and 40% coming from locally generated renewable sources). But currently HI is at 18% renewable energy state-wide (the first bench mark for 2015 had a goal of 15% renewable energy). Of the 18% renewable energy: on the Big Island, 48.1%  from renewables; on Maui, 29.1%; Kaua’i, 18.8%; Ouaha, 11.7%.

Yes, HI is going strong with solar and other renewable energies not only because Hawaiians or residents of Kaua’i are blessed with sunshine but because of their utility such as KIUC is continually looking for ways to collaborate and encourage their state legislators to move toward Renewable Energy. Most importantly, Kaua’i is blessed with island residents who aim to live in harmony and spirit of conservation with Mother Nature. Thumb up for KIUC! Hip! Hip! Hurray for Kaua’i and KIUC! We hope all other states in USA will look toward KIUC for their shining example during our earthly transition toward a Renewable and Clean Energy Future.

Time For Collaboration! Sunny Day in FL (credit: sunisthefuture-Susan Sun Nunamaker)

(the letter below is inspired by one of the Kiva Zip businesses that is seeking help with marketing)

Greetings, Kiva Team,

Sunisthefuture Team at Kiva would like to propose a collaborative effort with small businesses at Kiva Zip:

Our goal here at Sun Is The Future is in speeding up the transition toward solar energy age via education and helping entrepreneurs to establish small businesses in solar energy/ renewable energy/energy efficiency/ recycling, and online store. Understanding that limited budget for marketing is a common theme for many small business owners, I’d like to call the attention to ways of reducing costs while receiving marketing and PR help for these small business owners:

Firstly, any small businesses at kiva.zip.org that has installed solar system and provided sunisthefuture.net with photos of their solar rooftop system and permission to post/promote will be recognized at sunisthefuture.net and will be promoted by Sun Is The Future at various social networks (Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Google+) 3 times for a period of a week. For those that (think) cannot afford the initial cost of installing solar systems, please view these posts:

  1. Clean Energy Is Made Easy With Solar City
  2. Go Solar! With Solar City, Solar Is Ready To Go Mainstream!
  3. Elon Musk, The Game Chanager & Risk Taker Who Sped Up Transition Toward Renewables
  4. Solar City Teaming Up With Tesla

Hopefully, they will have realized that Solar City will be able to install solar system (in states where Solar City exists) at their rooftops for free so that these small businesses would simply purchase their electricity through Solar City. These small businesses, once having installed solar systems through Solar City on their rooftops or via Community Solar Gardens in a community solar garden ,  will be able to receive promotion by Sun Is The Future at sunisthefuture.net and via social networks, as mentioned above, free of charge. Be sure to submit the photos of your solar system and a letter/email of permission for the use of your photos in order for Sun Is The Future to promote your business online.  Why do you want to be promoted by Sun Is The Future?  There are readers/viewers from over 164 countries here at Sun Is The Future.

May we all work together in speeding toward our Earthly Solar Future!

Solar City Teaming Up With Tesla

In a recent report on Solar City teaming up with Tesla, Solar City will use Tesla’s batteries for energy storage. This fast-growing solar installer, Solar City, has found a solution to energy storage issue while reducing energy cost and demand cost. Called DemandLogic, it could allow businesses to use stored electricity in times of peak demand, reducing their usage at peak periods and the associated fees (called the demand charges). Below you will find a video of Solar City’s Lyndon Rive, discussing the transformative impact of Solar CIty:

Energy charges have risen rapidly (Source: EIA)-DemandLogic reduces your demand charges from day one. And because demand charges tend to rise, your savings increase over time (Source: http://www.solarcity.com/commercial/demandlogic/)

Lyndon Rive (cousin of Elon Musk, chairman of Solar City), Solar City’s chief executive, said that the systems would provide backup power and a working solar array during blackouts. Mr. Rive also added that he does not see the systems as a step toward independence from the grid, although storage is very important in maintaining grid stability as more customers continue to adopt solar.

Based on a $1.8 million grant in 2010 from the California Public Utilities Commission to study the possibilities of storing electricity from rooftop solar arrays in batteries, the product was developed. The company has also signed up approximately 300 of its residential customers for a pilot program using battery packs from Tesla (where Elon Musk, cousin of Lyndon Rive, is the chief executive of Tesla and chairman of the Solar City, as indicated in our post/video of Dec. 11, 2013). The company will offer its storage systems in parts of California, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

“It’s not a no-brainer-you still have to have the  right combinations of rates and demand charges and the cost of the equipment. But if the systems are able to take advantage of a 30% federal tax credit, the economics would have broader appeal.” according to a senior research analyst at Navigant Research.

The new customers at Solar City systems signing 10-year service agreements are eligible for the credit. The Solar City systems are made to store about a third of the energy the solar array can produce. Mr. Rive guarantees that there would be reductions of demand charge, at about 20%. Part of the appeal is that the system allows businesses to continue operating at full capacity, rather than reducing power usage, as in traditional demand response program.

It is improbable to write and research about energy of the 21st century without cooming across Elon Musk….Elon is definitely a game changer for this century, a true risk taker who is so passionate about what he believes in that he risked majority of his assets on one of his projects.  Without further ado, here is our enigmatic Elon Musk (Born in South Africa from a Canadian mother), the innovator/founder or chair for: Pay Pal, Tesla, SpaceX, and Solar City. I cannot find another human being on the planet earth who has done as much in speeding up the transition toward the renewables and away from the fossil fuel as Elon Musk. This is one of the best profile of Elon Musk I’ve come across, below:

I’ve received so much comments/questions about the Solar City post of Dec. 9, 2013, that I’ve decided to have a series of 3 posts on Solar City (today’s post will be the second of this series).  To help answer some of your questions, I found another video that further clarifies what Solar City is offering, below:

As Lindon Rive, Founder & CEO of Solar City, has asked, “If you had the choice  between paying more for dirty power, or paying less for clean power, what would you do?” Of course, the answer should be quite obvious to all of us.

For people who are hesitant in installing solar due to the upfront cost,  Solar City has come up with a disruptive solution: installing solar equipment for free and just sell the electricity (such that solar generated electricity costs less than the electricity generated from the utility). So, Solar City has to deal with the challenge of building a massive delivery mechanism for installing and deploying solar at a scale that has never been seen before in this country. Through this mechanism, solar energy consumers acquire that sense of independence and autonomy that was not available in the past.  This exciting transformation will ultimately lead to rooftop solar being seen everywhere. Solar City is showing us a path toward having economically viable sustainable energy. Yes, solar is finally ready to become a mainstream power source! Yes, Solar City will install for their customers’ solar systems for free. Solar City’s customers pay for solar power by the month, as they’d have with their utility bill. The only difference is that their solar bill would be lower than their previous utility bill. Solar City makes it very easy and simple for the customers, taking care of everything from designing and permitting, to installing, monitoring and maintaining the system.  I believe so strongly in Solar City’s business model that I’ve decided to purchase stocks in the company after I complete this post.

However, for those of us who have no intention of moving within 20+ years and who are willing to put in the upfront cost, it is still better to put in the initial cost ourselves because once the solar panels had completely paid for itself (within less than 10 years), the solar electricity received will be completely free. Just in case you don’t already know, some of those solar panels may last as long as 50+ years (even though the warranty may only be for 20 years)!

Going Solar makes both environmental sense and economic sense. It’s a No Brainer! As long as you’ve got a rooftop, it’s time to Go Solar!

Some of you Floridians pointed out the fact that Solar City did not seem to be available in FL (based on our Dec. 9, 2013 post). The reason that Florida is not on the top of the Solar City priority list is because there are not as much incentives in the state of Florida for renewable energy.  So, if you would like to see that changed, please feel free to go to the top of this post to participate in our petition drive for Renewable-FIT For Sunshine State! Let’s speed up the transition toward solar and renewable energy in Sunshine State or any state!

If you’d like to go solar and need some help with financing, then I’d like to share some information on Solar City with you. Solar City is an American provider of energy services to homeowners, businesses, and government/non-profit organizations. There have already been over 68,000 homeowners signing up with Solar City, and thousands are enjoying the benefits of clean and more affordable energy from this company. As long as you have a good roof, the solar installation is free and Solar City monitors the solar power systems to ensure that everything is running smoothly and covers maintenance, repairs and insurance at no added cost in the rare event problems arise.

Among its primary services, the company designs, finances and installs solar energy systems, performs energy efficiency audits and retrofits and builds charging stations for electric vehicles. The company had more than 2,500 employees as of December 2012. SolarCity has grown in recent years to meet the rapidly growing installation of solar photovoltaic systems in the United States. The overall US market has grown from 440 MW of “solar panels installed in 2009 to 3,300 megawatts in 2012, and it is expected to grow to 4,300 megawatts” in 2013. Here is a video to demonstrate how clean energy is made easy with Solar City, below:

SolarCity was founded in July 2006 by brothers Peter and Lyndon Rive, based on a suggestion for a solar company concept from Elon Musk. SolarCity has been the leading provider of residential solar power in California since 2007, its first full year of operation, according to the database kept by the California Solar Initiative and was the number one residential solar installer in the U.S. in 2011, according to Greentech Media Research. In 2013, Solar Power World magazine listed SolarCity as the No. 2 overall solar installation company in the U.S.

SolarCity is headquartered in San Mateo, California, but the company uses a distributed service model in which it provides installation from local operations centers. SolarCity has additional locations in:

In 2008, SolarCity introduced a new solar lease option for homeowners that significantly reduces or eliminates the upfront cost of installing solar power. SolarCity’s solar lease can allow some homeowners to pay less each month by adopting solar power than they previously paid for electricity from the utility company.

SolarCity began more actively providing solar services to business, government, and non-profit customers in 2008. In May 2008, the company completed what was, at the time, the largest commercial solar installation in San Jose on the North Campus of eBay. That July, SolarCity completed what was then the largest commercial solar installation in San Francisco, for British Motors, consisting of 1,606 solar photovoltaic panels. SolarCity introduced new financing options for businesses in 2009 and has built multiple solar projects for other large organizations including Walmart, Intel, and the U.S. military. On March 21, 2013 SolarCity announced that it would open a new location in Nevada in cooperation with state government.

SolarCity entered the electric car charging business by buying the SolSource Energy business of Clean Fuel Connections, Inc., which was reported to be finalized in 2009 and has also announced a partnership with Rabobank to make electric car charging available for free to owners of Tesla Motors‘ vehicles traveling on U.S. Route 101 in California between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Other cars that can make use of the same charging technology are welcome. In 2011, the company announced it would install electric car chargers that could charge a wide range of EVs in all of its service territories.

In 2010, SolarCity acquired Building Solutions, a software-enabled home energy audit firm, and began to offer energy efficiency evaluations and upgrades such as air and duct sealing, efficient heating/cooling and lighting to its list of services. SolarCity worked with Admiral’s Bank of Boston in March 2012 to make a new loan available to finance energy efficiency improvements  and expanded its energy efficiency services to the east coast.

SolarStrong is SolarCity’s five-year plan to build more than $1 billion in solar photovoltaic projects for privatized military housing communities across the United States, announced in late 2011. SolarCity plans to work with the country’s leading privatized military housing developers to install, own and operate rooftop solar installations and provide solar electricity at a lower cost than utility power. SolarStrong is ultimately expected to create up to 300 megawatts of solar generation capacity that could provide power to as many as 120,000 military housing units, which would make it the largest residential photovoltaic project in American history if completed. In November 2011, SolarCity and Bank of America Merrill Lynch announced that they have agreed to terms on initial debt financing for SolarStrong.

Updates on our Solar-FIT For Sunshine State petition: 163 signatures strong. We need more! Please help us to spread more sunshine by signing this petition and sharing it with others. It is our shared responsibility to move toward the renewable energy age and Sunshine is the cleanest, healthiest, and least war-prone way to go! Thank you. ________________________________________________________________________________________

I’ve just discovered Walmart‘s plan to install solar panels on up to 60 additional stores in California, expanding Walmart’s solar portfolio to more than 75 % of its stores in the state. “California presents a great opportunity for Walmart to make significant progress toward our sustainability goals by installing solar power on more than 130 store rooftops throughout the state,” said Kim Saylors-Laster, Walmart vice president of energy. “Walmart has reduced energy expenses by more than a million dollars through our solar program, allowing us to pass these savings on to our customers in the form of everyday low prices.”

When complete, Walmart’s total solar commitment in California is expected to:
• Generate up to 70 million kilowatt hours of clean, renewable energy per year, which is the equivalent of powering more than 5,400 homes*;
• Avoid producing more than 21,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, which is the equivalent of taking approximately 4,100 cars off the road*; and
• Provide 20 to 30 percent of each facility’s total electric needs.

“Walmart’s effort to expand and accelerate its solar power initiative program here in California demonstrates their commitment to sustainability. These kinds of projects create jobs, reduce costs for businesses by lowering power bills, and protect the environment,” said Mary D. Nichols, Chair of the California Air Resources Board. “We appreciate Walmart’s leadership and encourage other businesses to follow Walmart’s lead.”

Walmart’s investment in solar power is anticipated to create hundreds of jobs in California through its partnership with SolarCity, which will own, install and maintain the new solar power systems. The San Mateo, Calif.-based company has added more than 500 new full-time jobs since it initiated its first Walmart solar project, and expects to hire hundreds more before the end of the year.

Walmart of the East Coast also announced the completion of eight new solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays in Massachusetts with an event at its Walpole store, demonstrating the store’s solar array for state and local officials, environmental leaders and other guests.

“The stores in Massachusetts demonstrate our commitment to increasing the share of renewable energy that powers our stores and improving energy efficiency,” said David Ozment , senior director of energy at Walmart. “We believe in helping our customers live better by providing every day low cost and more environmentally friendly alternatives, like renewables. It’s our goal to eventually be supplied by 100 percent renewable energy.”

With almost 10,000 panels, the solar PV arrays throughout the state will provide 2.8 million kilowatt hours (kWh) annually, saving approximately 1,484 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2e) annually – roughly the equivalent of taking 309 cars off the road.* The Walpole store alone will generate more than 380,000 kWh annually, saving roughly 200 metric tons of CO2e per year.

Our best wishes to Walmart’s commitment  towards the goal of being supplied by 100% renewable energy. We hope more businesses will follow Walmart’s lead in setting goals that will not only be environmental-wise but also economic-wise in the march toward solar and renewable energy future.
