Elon Musk has followed through with his promise to solve the growing energy crisis in South Australia in 100 days! Tesla (TSLA) cofounder and energy division head Lyndon Rive boldly claimed, back in March of 2017, that he would commit to installing the 100-300 megawatt hours of battery required to prevent the increasingly frequent blackouts of South Australia within 100 days. He said the company could do the same in Victoria, where the closure of the 1600 MW Hazelwood coal plant in March was raising more fears of increasing blackouts across the eastern states electricity market next summer, following a near blackout in NSW on February 10 after an unexpected spike in demand due to a heat wave. Musk upped the ante by not only backing Rive’s claim but also insisting that if the 100 MWh of battery system would not be installed within 100-day window, he (Musk) would offer the service completely free of charge. When the billionaire-entrepreneur Mike Cannon-Brookes asked Musk in March, if Tesla was serious when it claimed it could quickly end blackouts in South Australia,”Tesla will get the system installed and working 100 days from contract signature or it is free. That serious enough for you?” Musk tweeted at the time.

To solve South Australia’s energy crisis, Tesla (TSLA) has teamed up with French renewable energy firm Neoen and an Australian state government (with a South Australian company CPP doing the ground work) to install the world’s largest lithium ion battery farm. Paired up with Neoen’s existing Hornsdale Wind Farm in the state of South Australia, near Jamestown, north of Adelaide, the battery farm will have three times the capacity as the next biggest in the world. South Australia Premier Jay Weatherill said this extraordinary collaboration would deliver a grid-scale battery that would “stabilize the South Australian network as well as putting downward pressure on prices. Battery storage is the future of our national energy market, and the eyes of the world will be following our leadership in this space.” The project is intended to sustain 100 MW of power and store 129 MWh, being able to power about 30,000 homes, according to Tesla. The project is currently slated for completion by December to harness the existing Hornsdale Wind Farm to charge the mega-battery while the wind is blowing and discharge power when it is most needed. Musk commented, “It’s a fundamental efficiency improvement to the power grid, and it’s really quite necessary and quite obvious considering a renewable energy future.” In essence, by storing renewable (wind and solar) energy during off-peak hours and then discharging that energy during peak hours, utility companies are able to cut costs, improve reliability and resiliancy, and reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

Tesla was able to beat the other 91 international bidders for this project. It is understandable, for the company has made substantial progress in the utility front since introducing Powerwall and Powerpack about two years ago. Tesla now supplies energy to the Hawaiian Island of Kauai using a large solar energy plant running on the Powerpack technology. Medium size businesses are also turning to Tesla tech for energy storage, including the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Southern California Edison’s Mira Loma substation in Ontario, California powering 15,000 homes. So, while the South Australia project may have an ambitious timetable, Tesla’s impressive resume suggests that the 100-day goal should not be a problem for Tesla.

In the meantime, rumor has it that citizens from other countries have also taken to social media to ask Musk for help. A user by the same of @5AllanLeVito asked Musk to bring a similar project to Ukraine, above. Musk’s response “Sure”, and laid out the cost. New Zealand and others may soon to follow. Thank goodness for new technology Twitter: much will be accomplished within much shorter period of time! Hurray for the renewable future! Hurray for America’s adopted son, Elon Musk, in his progress/effort in saving our planet earth!

Perhaps the Floridians should start tweeting Elon Musk for our battery system!

The Magnificent Solar Project of Royal Adelaide Showground of Australia

I’ve got quite a treat for you today!

Besides the Australian Federal Solar Incentives and Australian State Feed-In-Tariffs, Australian government also provided other forms of encouragement for solar/renewable energy projects. In 2008, Premier Mike Rann announced the $8 million investment in the largest rooftop solar installation to take place at The Royal Adelaide Showground (locally known as the Wayville Showground). The Showground is located in the inner-southern Adelaide suburb of Wayville, just south of Greenhill Road. It is bordered by Goodwood Road (east), Leader Street (south), the railway line (west) and Rose Terrace (north). The Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia (RAHS) has controlled the site since the 1920s, the land having been purchased by the South Australian government prior to the First World War. The Royal Adelaide Showground  moved to the present site in 1925. The Adelaide Showground has one of the largest under-cover exhibition spaces in the Southern Hemisphere, hosting over 140 exhibitions and conferences,  attracting over 1.3 million visitors each year. From its 3.5 million liter underground water tanks to its solar installation generating 1,400 megawatt hour of solar electricity each year (equivalent to the capacity of powering 250 South Australian homes, powering 40% of the total average annual Showground’s power needs, saving 1,400 tonnes of greenhouse gas emission annually), Adelaide Showground is arguably the most environmentally friendly multi-purpose venue in Australia. It also provides a valuable educational resource for the wider community (check out its Solar Power Meter below, rarely seen at any other solar rooftop installations).

that I have never seen at any other solar installation sites. It is easy to see the pride of the local people in their Royal Adelaide Showground solar rooftop through the eyes of Mr. Ross Hocking.

The project is the first MW-scale industrial rooftop  solar plant in Australia and the first commercial installation of First Solar Cd-Te thin film technology. The total area of the panels is 9,239 square-meters, installed on six buildings: Goyder, Jubilee, Wayville, Dairy/Goat Pavilions, Duncan Gallery, and Ridley Center. 12,612 First Solar 77.5 watt thin film CdTe modules, manufactured in Malaysia, and 108 Suntech 210 watt polycrystalline Si modules, manufactured in China, were installed on northern facades, Jubilee and Goyder Pavilions and screens. It took just three months to complete. The system is divided into 184 sub-systems, each is monitored for power production. The thin film technology chosen for this project has better temperature tolerance than typical mono- or poly- crystalline panels. These panels are warrantied for 25 years, but are expected to last at least 30-40 years. Its estimated average 1,400 annual power production will generate a gross saving of approximately $126,000 pa. Furthermore, as an Accredited Power Station, Renewable Energy Credits (REC’s) are received for MW’s generated, estimated at about $46,000 (traded at market value).

Installation of the solar panels and associated systems was managed by building and engineering company Built Environs in partnership with grid-connect solar systems provider Solar Shop Australia. Usually the panels are washed once a year. Maintenance was contracted for the first ten years by the systems integrators, Solar Shop Australia Pty Ltd, to ensure the correct functioning of all structural and electrical components.

Once again, we see the importance of effective government policy and/or actions that would benefit both the consumers and growth of solar energy industry, insuring local economic prosperity while solving a nation’s concern for energy security and environmental quality. Australian government and politicians have accomplished a great deal. Bravo!

This is an interview with a team member David of TAFE SA Solar Spirit team of TAFE South Australia University at World Solar Challenge 2013 at Hindmarsh Square of Adelaide, Australia. SOLAR SPIRIT 3 is an extremely comfortable car to be sitting in. I can now attest to that fact. Below is the interview conducted inside SOLAR SPIRT 3 of TAFE SA:

Building solar car is part of the curriculum for students at TAFE South Australia University. Students at TAFE should be proud of what they have accomplished and be thankful for this opportunity to advance their skills in green technology of solar car building as I am thankful for being able to sit in this wonderfully comfortable vehicle to conduct this interview.

Human Interests (Future Solar Museum, Future Model Solar Car Race/Challenge, Future Solar Car Racers/Dirvers/Pilots) Resulting From Veolia World Solar Challenge 2011

Dear Readers,

If any of you will have the opportunity to travel to the Southern Hemisphere in 2013 during month of October, check out the Veolia World Solar Challenge (world solar car race) between Darwin and Adelaide of Australia !  More information about its future occurrence will be found at http://www.worldsolarchallenge.org/ As one of the readers of Sun Is The Future had described it affectionately as the Olympics For the Nerds…I would go one step further and call it the Olympics For Enthusiasts For Life!  We have seen futuristic solar cars built by both engineers and non-engineers, solar car drivers of both female and male having driven through different ecosystems (from deserts to temperate forests and tropical climates) and experienced unexpected wind, rain, and fire, and participants and observers from all age groups and walks of life.  Veolia World Solar Challenge brought out our fervor for life and hope and optimism for our future with solar and renewable energy.  It even provided us with further intrigues in the very end with protest and recalculations of the results.  Perfect demonstration of an  exciting time we’re living in, in a time when our planet earth is ready to evolve/transition into the next stage of human history,with new perspective and appreciation for renewable/solar energy, for gender equality (true appreciation for working cooperatively together rather than wasting energy in any ancient battle of the sexes), and willingness to ask/entertain change or improvement.  As long as we are  all focused on “we’re all in this together”, here on planet earth, working for the common goal of a better planet for the future generations.

During the reporting of this event, I came across many human interest stories;three of which particularly reflect the point above.  I’d like to share with you, below,  three people all having the common dream of working for a better future involving education and building of solar cars:

1.  The first one concerns a father from Sydney, Australia area by the name of Garrick Everett.  Mr. Everett had been in the field of education for many years.

After observing the Veolia World Solar Challenge, he would love to be able to build a solar car with his teenage son.  He also dreams about the possibility of starting a museum for/of solar energy.  So, if you have any positive suggestions, comments, funding, items, or time that  you’d like to share with Mr. Everett, please contact him via ever777@hotmail.com Mr. Everett and his children are fortunate enough to have such common interests and they will create wonderful memories together for many decades to come.

2.  Secondly, is the volunteer at education outreach of Aurora World Solar Car at aurorasolarcar.com, Martin Brook.  Mr. Brook is a model solar car enthusiast who had been dreaming about rebuilding the model solar car race of Australian National Final of Model Solar Car Race. youtube video clip below


 

So, let’s help him, however we can, to fulfill his dream and perhaps even expanding his dream to be that of a Model World Solar Car Race/Challenge.  Any of you model car, model solar car race enthusiasts, car manufacturers, toy companies, battery companies, solar cell companies, educational resource centers,  etc.  may be interested in getting in touch with Martin Brook about potential future Model World Solar Car Race.  I would also encourage many teachers for K-12 out there to consider getting involved/starting activities/projects that may help to stimulate your students’ interests in solar energy, math, science, and engineering via model solar car race mentioned by Martin Brook.

 

3. Thirdly, it was wonderful to have met people from so many different countries right at the Victoria Square of Adelaide (the ceremonial finish line for the World Solar Challenge 2011), Australia.  I met several teachers who were able to bring their students all the way from Colombia to watch Veolia World Solar Challenge 2011 as a result of having won a contest.  I talked to one of the teachers, Mauricio Lozano,

who is also the Director of Discience Foundation.  He is trying to stimulate his students’ interests in math, science, and engineering by bringing these students to observe and consider participating/building a solar car in the future.  Those of you from Colombia (or elsewhere) who would like to find out  more about or to help support Discience Foundation, please feel free to get in touch with Mr. Mauricio Lozano via mauricio@discience.org (web site for Discience Foundation is www.discience.org).

I even saw some of the solar car enthusiasts deeply engrossed in confirming some calculations about some aspect of the solar car race, photo included….perhaps this would be the appropriate image to have in mind when we think about the Olympics For The Nerds/Enthusiasts For Life……it’s all a matter of overcoming the hurdles of the minds….
