Falcon 9 Launched and Landed Successfully on Atlantic Ship on May 6, 2016, From Cape Canaveral, While Observing the 4R’s (Recycle-Reuse-Repair-Reduce).

Out of his concern for the future of mankind and desire to reduce the risk of human extinction , reduce the cost of space transportation, and making human life multiplanetary possible via setting up a human colony on Mars, Elon Musk became the founder, CEO and CTO of SpaceX .

Of the three successful landings and recoveries post-launch of Falcon 9 within the past one and half year (Dec. of 2015, April of 2016, and May 6 of 2016), May 6, 2016 is the second time the rocket has landed intact on the ship ( Falcon 9 landed on the floating drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean).

During May 6, 2016 Falcon 9 mission, a Japanese communication satellite is sent to a very high orbit above Earth (aka geostationary transfer orbit) despite the fact that the rocket is subjected to extreme velocities and re-entry heating, making it difficult to have a successful landing. But shortly after the launch, SpaceX confirmed that not only did Falcon 9 make a perfect landing, but it deployed its satellite correctly.

SpaceX will continue to attempt to land the rocket at sea/ocean for its next few launches (about two third of its overall launches) because it is safer and requires less fuel than landing on land (explained below):

For a better understanding of SpaceX’s achievements: SpaceX’s achievements include the first privately funded, liquid-propellant rocket (Falcon 1) to reach orbit, in 2008; the first privately funded company to successfully launch, orbit and recover a spacecraft (Dragon), in 2010; and the first private company to send a spacecraft (Dragon) to the ISS, in 2012. The launch of SES-8, in 2013, was the first SpaceX delivery into geosynchronous orbit, while the launch of the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR), in 2015, was the company’s first delivery beyond Earth orbit. On December 21, 2015, SpaceX successfully returned a first stage back to the launch site and accomplished a vertical landing, the first such accomplishment by a rocket on an orbital trajectory. On April 8, 2016, with the launch of CRS-8, SpaceX successfully vertically landed a first stage on an ocean drone platform and delivered Dragon to Low Earth Orbit. On May 6, 2016, SpaceX again landed a first stage, but on a geostationary transfer mission, another first.

Furthermore, SpaceX is able to reduce the cost of the design and therefore cost of the space transport through a reusable launch system. A reusable launch system (RLS, or reusable launch vehicle, RLV) is a launch system which is capable of launching a payload into space more than once. This contrasts with expendable launch systems, where each launch vehicle is launched once and then discarded. No completely reusable orbital launch system is currently in use. The closest example was the partially reusable Space Shuttle. The orbiter, which included the Space Shuttle main engines, and the two solid rocket boosters, were reused after several months of refitting work for each launch. The external tank and launch vehicle load frame were discarded after each flight. However, several at least partially reusable systems are currently under development, such as the Falcon 9 full thrust (first stage).

Space Age Solar Power Is Real & Is Here To Change The World

Isn’t it terrific that in the process of searching for solution to one problem, the California Drought, in our previous post, one may be led to a new horizon that holds the promise to all critical earthly issues: Energy-Pollution-Water-International Conflicts-Local Economics. Such is the case when I came across the concept and video on “Seawater Desalination via Solar Power Satellites“. I felt the need to find out more about Solar Power Satellites for energy is the common denominator and deciding factor for economic growth, inflation, and national security.  There is great need for all earthlings to transition quickly from a paradigm with pollution to a new paradigm of clean energy and better quality of life. Solar Energy future truly holds the key for it creates the least amount of environmental risk compared to other alternative energy sources. Now, in order to reach the desired growth speed to meet the demand of our growing earthly population, Solar Powered Satellite or Space-Based Solar Power would be the ultimate answer to address all of these issues.

Years ago, space-based solar power was too expensive and impractical. But things have changed since then. “The topic appeared to be dead several years ago, but it has received new life in the last year and a half,” said John C. Mankins, former head of Advanced Concepts Studies at NASA Headquarters, at a “Green Series” lecture in the Pearl Young Theatre in 2008.

To recap a bit of history regarding Space Energy industry: Peter Glaser, a vice president at Arthur D. Little, invented the “Solar Power Satellite” in 1968. The patent for that satellite was received in 1973. The basic design concept of a space-based solar power system in the 1970s was inefficient, difficult to launch, had no automation and received negative feedback from the National Research Council (NRC) and the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA). Much have changed since 1973: We have increased solar power generation efficiency, increased efficiency in wireless power transmission, created easier launch capabilities and have a more retractable design that does not require any astronauts or space factories, as the 1970s version did.

John C. Mankins, former head of Advanced Concepts Studies at NASA Headquarters,  made the point that “you don’t need hundreds of billions of dollars to see if these new systems are economically viable.” He admits that we are faced with a “grand challenge,” in part because there is no U.S. organization responsible for both space programs and solar energy security. That was then,  now we have SpaceX, a company that has already improved/dramatically reduced the cost of space transport and launch.

It is improbable to write and research about energy of the 21st century without cooming across Elon Musk….Elon is definitely a game changer for this century, a true risk taker who is so passionate about what he believes in that he risked majority of his assets on one of his projects.  Without further ado, here is our enigmatic Elon Musk (Born in South Africa from a Canadian mother), the innovator/founder or chair for: Pay Pal, Tesla, SpaceX, and Solar City. I cannot find another human being on the planet earth who has done as much in speeding up the transition toward the renewables and away from the fossil fuel as Elon Musk. This is one of the best profile of Elon Musk I’ve come across, below:

Wow, have you heard about the exciting idea Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla Motors & SpaceX) has been floating recently (in the initial “Alpha” design released on Aug. 12, 2013)? It’s a solar-powered, high speed, inter-city elevated transit system, Hyperloop, that could take passengers and cars from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 30-35 minutes?! Elon Musk has the vision of Hyperloop transporting people (and cars) via aluminum pods/capsules enclosed inside of steel tubes. This is what he envisioned as the ‘fifth mode’ of transportation: an alternative to boats, aircraft, automobiles, and trains.

Musk described the design looking like a shotgun with the tubes running side by side for most of the journey and closing the loop at either end. The tube is partially evacuated to reduce friction. The capsule or pod carriage rides on a cushion of air forced through multiple openings at the capsule’s bottom, further reducing friction. The capsules would be propelled by linear induction motors placed at intervals along the route.

These tubes would be mounted on columns 50 to 100 yards apart and the pods or capsules inside would travel up to 760 mph.

Musk thinks the Hyperloop can avoid many of the land issues because the tube will be elevated and paralleling I-5 corridor (the direct freeway between L.A. and San Francisco) for most of its length. Farmers would access their land between the columns instead of having swaths of their land blocked by train tracks. The “Alpha” proposal estimates  the Hyperloop could be built for $6 billion with pods/capsules for passenger only version or $7.5 billion for larger pods holding both people and cars. It is designed to link cities less than 1,000 miles apart (if above 1,000 miles, the cost would be prohibitive) with high inter-city traffic, such as LA to San Francisco, NY to D.C., NY to Boston. Let’s take a look at this fifth mode of transportation, in the video below:

Some of the positive features of Hyperloop:

  • speed: four times as fast as California’s proposed train
  • lower cost: at one tenth the cost of CA’s proposed train and lower cost than a plane ride
  • safety:  safe distance between the pods would be about 5 miles, fitting 70 pods between LA and San Francisco, leaving every 30 seconds…as getting a ride on Space Mountain at Disneyland
  • comfort: less lateral acceleration than a subway ride, without turbulence or sudden movements of an airplane, therefore supersmooth
  • more convenient
  • immune to weather
  • sustainably self-powering (solar powered)
  • resistant to earthquake
  • not disruptive to those along the route

But is Musk revealing his dream too soon?  Apparently Elon Musk is too busy building Tesla and SpaceX to be able to get to Hyperloop. So, the design of Hyperloop will become available to the world,  Open Source! The model will open up universal access, offering the opportunity for world collaboration and redistribution of the design and improvements to the design.

I cannot wait to see the realization of this design, compositing the shotgun-air hockey table-concorde into this fifth mode of transportation. The future is full of realizations of the impossible! Here We Come!

Elon Musk, The Man Behind Tesla-SpaceX-SolarCity, Also Believes In Solar Future!

I’ve got to share this TED talk with you! I enjoyed this clip so much that I kept on playing it over and over again. Even though I’ve previously written a post, Oct. 3, 2012, titled “Game Changer: Tesla’s Supercharger, Using Solar Power, Fills Your Tank For Free! it is great to  hear an even more in-depth discussion with Elon Musk, the South African-born American entrepreneur best known for founding SpaceX

and PayPal. Elon Musk talks about the need for sustainable electricity energy production as well as sustainable consumption. It is great to hear some one who also agrees with the premise behind Sun Is The Future, that solar energy will ultimately become the major source of our energy production in the future. As he indicated, the Sun as our fusion generator in the sky, is waiting to be tapped for the continuation of our human civilization. Much of our ecosystem is already solar-powered. The important thing for us to do now is to get the cost of installation and cost of financing down. Therefore, Elon Musk also became the force behind SolarCity, an American provider of energy services to homeowners, businesses and government/non-profit organizations, to design, finance, and install solar energy systems, to perform energy efficiency audits and retrofits and to build charging stations for electric vehicles.  With the help of SolarCity concept, it would enable giant distributed utility, insuring future majority energy source being solar while allowing greater percentage of the human population to take part in the use and implementation of solar energy.
