My Dear Friends of the Sunshine,

It is with both hope and pleasure that I am bringing you report about an event that took place on June 13-14, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency in Denver, Colorado:  The SunShot Grand Challenge Summit and Technology Forum.  In addition to featuring the solar industry’s most influential leaders, the event showcased the work of more than 200 SunShot awardees.  The list of distinguished speakers at this SunShot Grand Challenge: Summit and Technology Forum were: Steven Chu (the 12th Secretary of Energy who is also the co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1997);

Dan Arvizu (Director and Chief Executive of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, NREL);Harry Atwater (Howard Hughes Professor and Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology, active in PV research for more than 20 years);Bill Ritter (Colorado’s 41st Governor and the Director of the Center for the New Energy Economy, CNEE, at Colorado State University);Dorothy Robyn (Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Installations and Environment in 2009);Richard Swanson (one of the premier authorities on crystalline-silicon solar cell technology, processing, and manufacturing);John Woolard (President and CEO of BrightSource Energy, a developer of utility-scale solar power plants).

In 2010, the SunShot Initiative was established to decrease the total installed price of solar energy by 75% by 2020. Since then, photovoltaic module costs have been cut in half.  While there is still another factor of two to go before reaching a tipping point, in some markets cost-competitive solar is already a reality.  During the SunShot Grand Challenge Summit in Denver, CO, the event brought together more than 700 bright minds in solar to discuss what challenges lie ahead.  Among the many challenges: streamlining and standardizing solar permitting processes;convincing the financial community to embrace innovative technologies that have not yet been tested over long periods of time; and planning for infrastructure that will be able to handle high levels of variable solar energy inputs were discussed.

Recalling that the first commercially available solar cells costed $400 per watt back in the 1960s and prices for the state-of-the-art installed PV systems were about $3 per watt at the utility scale by the end of 2010,  we’ve come a long way to have arrived at today’s bids for large-scale plants in the range of $1.20 per watt. Dear readers, evidenced by the many innovations that’s been covered in http://sunisthefuture.net , it is not difficult to imagine the day when we will drive down the cost of solar to $1 per watt for a fully installed solar energy system in the near future.  I am sure that the SunShot Director Ramesh had learned during his term that the seemingly impossible will one day be possible.  Until then, Secretary Chu is playing his part in speeding up this process by announcing the “America’s Most Affordable Rooftop Solar” competition to aggressively drive down the cost of rooftop solar energy systems as well as nearly $8 million to nine small businesses to lower the cost of financing, permitting, and other “soft costs”, which can amount to nearly half the cost of residential solar systems.  This will support the Department’s aggressive goal of achieving cost-competitive solar energy by 2020.  “As President Obama has repeatedly said, we need an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy that deploys every available source of American energy, driving job creation, energy innovation and manufacturing leadership in our country,” said Secretary Chu.

To spur the use of low-cost residential and small commercial rooftop solar systems across the nation, the Department is launching the first SunShot competition to challenge U.S. teams to quickly drive down the cost of installed rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems. “America’s Most Affordable Rooftop Solar competition” offers a total of $10 million in prize money to the first three U.S. teams that can install 5,000 rooftop solar PV systems at an average price of $2 per watt. By setting an ambitious target, the competition aims to spur creative public-private partnerships, original business models, and innovative approaches to make solar energy affordable for millions of families and businesses.

Secretary Chu also today announced up to $8 million to support nine highly innovative startups through the SunShot Incubator program. These companies are developing transformative solutions to streamline solar installation processes such as financing, permitting, and inspection. This investment builds on the Incubator program’s proven track record of attracting follow-on investment for solar startups at a ratio of $30 in private investment for every $1 of government funding. Since 2007, the Energy Department has invested more than $60 million in the Incubator program, accelerating the development of solar technologies that have since attracted more than $1.6 billion in private investment.

The SunShot Initiative is a collaborative national effort to make solar energy cost competitive with other forms of energy by the end of the decade. Inspired by President Kennedy’s “Moon Shot” program that put the first man on the moon, the SunShot Initiative has created new momentum for the solar industry by highlighting the need for American competitiveness in the clean energy race.

With all of these initiatives, the clean/solar energy economy is already here and poised for tremendous growth in the coming years.

As we resume our report on Solar Decathlon 2011, I am also happy to announce that my hubby Mike is joining the sunisthefuture.net as the camera person and technical consultant. His years of experience in electrical engineering and computer software will definitely be very helpful in broadening our horizon here in Sun Is The Future.

Now back to Solar Decathlon 2011’s final stretch. On October 1, 2011, Energy Secretary Steven Chu said, “…All of these teams must be commended for their hard work. The houses on display blend affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. These talented students are demonstrating to consumers wide range of energy-saving solutions that are available today to save them money on their energy bills.”

The Market Appeal Contest results were announced on October 1, 2011, with Middlebury College’s Self-Reliance taking the first place with the score of 95 out of 10

University of Maryland’s Watershed in the second place with 94 points, and New Zealand’s First Light in the third place with a score of 93. The Market Appeal Contest evaluated the livability of each house and its appeal within the housing market.

Overall Results of Solar Decathlon 2011

All teams competed in ten contests during ten days that gauged each house’s performance, livability, and affordability. The teams performed everyday tasks, including cooking, laundry, and washing dishes, while testing the energy efficiency of their houses. After all contest results were tallied, University of Maryland’s Watershed earned 951.151 points out of the total possible 1000, winning the overall competition,

Each and every one of these solar home/house designs has its own purpose and individual and brilliant approaches in meeting its own special needs. Full competition results and details about the individual contests may be found at www.SolarDecathlon.gov .

Richard King, the Director of Solar Decathlon for the U.S. Department of Energy said, “The Department of Energy would like to thank these incredible students who represented the clean energy workforce of tomorrow and who helped bring this Solar Decathlon competition to life. Today’s announcement is the culmination of thousands of hours of hard work and determination. You have helped to show that any one can save money and energy in their own home starting right now.”

Hi, Friends and Readers of Sun Is The Future,

Let’s take a break from the political aspect of renewable energy and shift our attention to education and R & D for a moment. The coming series will be presentations of Solar Decathlon. Solar Decathlon of the U.S. Department of Energy is an international competition started/created by Richard King in 2002 (also held in 2005, 2007, 2009)that challenges 20 or so collegiate teams to design, build, and operate the most appealing and effective energy efficient solar-powered house. The winning team would have a design that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, design excellence, and optimal energy production consideration.

The next Solar Decathlon event is scheduled to take place at the National Mall’s West Potomac Park from September 23 to October 2, 2011. It will be open to the public and free of charge, weekdays: 10:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M., weekends: 10:00A.M.-5:30 P.M.

It is intended for public/visitors to tour ultra-efficient houses, to gather ideas to use in their own homes, and learn how to maximize energy efficiency in their own homes.

The Solar Decathlon challenges the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs to become pioneers of clean energy technology and efficient building design,” said Secretary Chu.  “This is a great opportunity for these talented students to showcase cutting edge technologies that will change the way we build homes and save families money.”

The competition is presented by the U.S. Department of Energy and organized by NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory).  There is also a Solar Decathlon Europe, established in 2007 between U.S and Spain, and a Solar Decathlon China established between U.S. Department of Energy and China’s National Energy Administration, Peking University, and Applied Material in 2011 and will be held in 2013.

Incentive For Solar (1)

Remember I’ve previously mentioned the importance of bringing down the cost of solar technology and increasing incentives from the government to stimulate solar energy use.  Incentives are crucial in speeding up the process of conversion to the renewable energy era!  So, my feelings had been rather mixed in recent months as a result of finding out more about SunShot Initiative.

Our current administration, President Obama, is keenly aware of the need to develop clean/renewable (specially solar) energy and wise enough to bring some one who is actually technologically savvy (and who is not simply in office to maintain the status quo) yet pragmatic enough to suggest painting our roofs white, the Nobel Laureate Steven Chu, on board to head the Department of Energy (DOE), at this critical juncture in history.   Much work needs to be done during this time of transition into the clean and renewable energy era and we need to see a lot of actions!  Building on the legacy of President Kennedy’s 1960s “moon shot” goal, which laid out a plan to regain the country’s lead in the space race and land a man on the moon, the SunShot Initiative will aggressively drive innovations in the ways that solar systems are conceived, designed, manufactured, and installed.  As spoken in President Kennedy’s September 12, 1962, speech, “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.”  So now, we are facing the hour of change and we choose solar energy, not because it is easy, but because it is the best route/energy for the future of planet earth.  In addition to investing in improvements in cell technologies and manufacturing, the SunShot initiative will also focus on steps to streamline and digitize local permitting processes that will reduce installation and permitting costs.  To achieve the SunShot goal of reducing the total installed cost of large scale solar electricity by about 75 percent (to roughly $1 per watt,  corresponding to 6 cents per kilowatt-hour) so that it will be cost competitive at large scale with other forms of energy without subsidies before the end of the decade (2020).  This would translate into rapid large-scale adoption of solar electricity across the United States, re-establish American technological leadership, improve the nation’s energy security, and strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness in the global clean energy race.  In this effort, DOE will be working closely with partners in government, industry, research laboratories and academic institutions across the country.

I was all pumped up until…. I  looked at the budget/money allotted for the SunShot Initiative. at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfL57T8ZGfc

Comparing it to the MoonShot program would not be quite on target!  The MoonShot/Apollo program had a budget of close to $200 billion (totaled about $170 billion in 2005, according to Wikipeida) in today’s dollar, in a span of about 11 years.  That (Apollo Program) would translate into approximately $20 billion per year.  The SunShot Initiative, as far as I have seen any figure,  has totaled to less than $0.5 billion per year (federal loan guarantee cannot be included).   That means the ratio of amount of money that will be spent on SunShot Program to the amount of money spent on Apollo Program is less than 0.5/20  or less than 1/40  .  So the two programs/initiatives are not in the same magnitude or ball park, my friends.  Last I checked 1/40 is a far cry from 1/1.  The optimistic side of me reasoned:  perhaps this is just a beginning.  Historically, most of the budget of Department of Energy would spend far more on nuclear energy and essentially nothing for wind or solar or geothermal.  We are at least seeing a number that is greater than zero.  But the more anxious pessimistic side of me exclaimed: if we (citizens of USA) truly want to re-establish American technological leadership, we need to take giant leaps rather than baby-steps.  We cannot  sit idly by while cost of fossil fuels continue to rise, while having learned from the experience of Fukushima.  Our friends in Germany have already taken the more responsible and ethical approach/step in bearing much of the cost of early  research and development in solar energy.  In our land of democracy, if we truly want to see some actions, we need to gather the strength of our people, our friends online, our neighbors, our family, every where.  We need to let our government know that we want clean, safe, and least-war-driven energy.  While our President and Secretary of Department of Energy have to abide by the rules of politics, we need to help uncuff their hands and truly let them lead us into the renewable energy era.  We need to let our administration know that we are ready to take giant leaps, rather than baby-steps, toward solar energy.

 

In the next post, I will go into details of certain incentive programs that have been tried and tested in many other countries .  My friends and readers, this is an exciting time, I hope you are all getting ready to move toward the sun because there will be plenty of opportunities for all of us!
