Japanese Yamakura Dam Will Soon Have World’s Largest Floating Solar Farm, in 2018!

Recall our previous post on The Current World’s Largest Floating Solar Farm, On London’s Queen Elizabeth II’s Reservoir, and the fact that the British may still have the largest floating solar farm in Europe by 2018, but the title for the World’s Largest Floating Solar Farm may soon be replaced by the Japanese floating reservoir  (the floating array on Yamakura Dam) with twice the size of Queen Elizabeth II reservoir, in 2018.

The floating array on Yamakura Dam in Chiba Prefecture (Southeast of Tokyo), will measure 180,000 sq meters and 13.7 MW, upon completion. Since the 2011 Fukushima disaster, Japan has created a number of solar farms on water as it has turned away from nuclear power, and land is in short supply. Considering the desirability of reducing evaporation from the reservoir through having solar panels above and cooling of the solar panels from water below, the concept of floating solar farm is simply a Win-Win phenomenon! In the case with a dam, there is also the added appeal in taking care of the solar intermittent energy source by using power generated from the dam.

In a joint venture, Kyocera Corporation and Century Tokyo Leasing Corporation announced that Kyocera TCL Solar LLC has started construction of the world’s largest*1 13.7 megawatt (MW) floating solar power plant on the Yamakura Dam reservoir, managed by the Public Enterprises Agency of Chiba Prefecture in Japan for industrial water services.

The Public Enterprises Agency of Chiba Prefecture publicly sought companies to construct and operate a floating solar power plant to help reduce environmental impact in October, 2014. Scheduled for launch in FY2018 (fiscal year ending March 31, 2018), the plant will be comprised of approximately 51,000 Kyocera modules installed over a fresh water surface area of 180,000 sq meters. The project will generate an estimated 16,170 megawatt hours (MWh) per year, enough electricity to power approximately 4,970 typical households. This would offset about 8,170 tons of CO2 emissions annually. This is equal to 19,000 barrels of oil consumed.

The Solar Car Parade of World Solar Challenge will start at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015 (Adelaide time…although it is still Oct. 24, 2015 in some parts of the world), at Victoria Square of Adelaide, Australia. It’s a glorious day for Solar Car Parade and a glorious time for Solar Energy Future!

is not only the first plant in the world to create a system that produces 24 hour a day electricity using only the power of the sun,it’s also been known to serve as the backdrop for various campaigns to set future trends (e.g.Louis Vuitton, Mercedes Benz and Ford). For the first time, in July (on July 17, 2015) of this year, this desert solar power plant in Spain will showcase the combination of haute couture and high end ready-to-wear collections from the 100-meter catwalk surrounded by circular formation of mirrors.

Trains, Powered By Sunshine, in Belgium and India

The Swiss Solar Impulse 2 (solar airplane) and French solar rooftops have inspired me to look toward other forms of transport and surface areas to be powered by or used to generate solar energy. It’s fantastic that there had been quite a few interesting progress made in the area of trains. Case in point, the high speed train powered by solar energy, in the video below, was in service back in 2011 in Belgium:

The rail line between Antwerp and Amsterdam (about 80 miles) in Belgium was the first solar paneled train tunnel (about 2.2 mile long tunnel) in Europe that utilized 16,000 solar panels (costed $22 million for installation) to power the railway infrastructure and trains back in June (started on June 14), of 2011, bringing clean energy to trains. This Solar Tunnel project is expected to generate 3.3 megawatts of energy (equivalent of the average annual electricity consumption for 4,000 trains or about 1,000 homes). The project partner Enfinity also indicated that the tunnel is decreasing CO2 emissions by 2,400 tons annually. “It is the perfect way to cut the carbon footprint because the spaces used have no other economic value,” commented by Bart Van Renterghem, Enfinity former UK head. Other collaborators on this project were Belgium rail operator Infrabel and solar construction company Solar Power Systems.  This was a fantastic clean energy project because it is optimizing the previously idled space and once the installation is in place, there is to be no consumption of fuel or coal and at no cost to our environment.

About 4461 miles (or 7179 km) away, India is planning to massively  utilize the solar energy via its state-owned railway systems. With one of the largest railway networks in the world, running about 12,000 trains, 23 million passengers (practically the entire Australian population), and 3 million tonnes of freight daily, much energy is needed.   In 2012, the Indian Railways consumed nearly 3 million kiloliters of diesel oil  and about 14 billion kWh of electricity .  So, India’s railway minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu wants to control such a ballooning fuel bill by shifting toward alternative energy sources. Since the Indian Railway System is aiming to have at least 10% of its total energy consumption coming from renewable energy by 2020, the railway minister wants to incorporate more alternative energy sources to power trains. This is first done by solar powered lighting via solar panels mounted on the roofs of the trains. This is now being tested on a non-AC coach on the RewariSitapur passenger train.

The cost of installing panels on each coach is about Rs3.9 lakh (about $6,084), translating into savings of Rs1.24 lakh (about $1,934) per year, According to The Economic Times of India Times.  In the next few weeks, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and the railway coach maker Integral Coach Factory will  be testing the solar  paneled coach under a variety of conditions. Besides the solar powered coach, the Indian Railways will also be building  solar power plants of about 8.8 MW (megawatts) in 200 train stations and some of its office buildings.

Without the common vision and collaborations from policy makers, such ambitious projects would not have existed. In India, it took the echoing  support between India’s prime minister Narendra Modi and railway minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu to enable such a solar project to become a reality.  Prime Minister Modi encouraged alternative energy projects by encouraging solar companies from around the world to invest $100 billion to reach its solar power capacity target of 100,000 MW by 2022 (about five times India’s current solar power generation capacity). He was also instrumental behind another ambitious project, World’s First Canal Solar Power Plant in India, in Gujarat, in one of our previous post.

I hope all policy makers and governing bodies will receive the support he/she/they/it need(s) during this critical transitional period in human history, onward and forward toward the renewable/solar energy future! For deep down, within all of our hearts, we know that Solar/Renewable/Clean Energy is the solution/answer to Energy-Pollution-Economic Prosperity-International Conflicts. The sooner we get there, the better it will be for us and our posterity. In our system of democracy, perhaps all of us may be able to help play a part in assisting our policy makers in arriving at the correct decisions or policies quickly.

Suntech and Greenfield Form a Strategic Alliance With youmex Providing a Complete Financial Package in the UK (Press Release)

Suntech will supply the alliance’s UK solar projects with its world-class panels

WUXI, China, Sept. 18, 2014 /Press Release/ — Shunfeng Photovoltaic International Limited and Greenfield Solar International GmbH & Co. KG have entered into a strategic alliance with German-based clean energy financing and investment group youmex to finance and sell their solar farm projects pipeline in Great Britain using Suntech as its exclusive PV panel supplier for projects.

“We are excited to complement our partnership with Greenfield with youmex’s financial services to our customers. We believe that this alliance will serve as another catalyst for growth in the UK’s solar market,” said Eric Luo, CEO of Suntech. “With its fully integrated transaction management of these three tasks, youmex speeds up and assures the whole process of financing and sales for one of the largest PV pipelines in UK,” explains Kai Hartmann, Head of Corporate & Structured Finance at youmex group. “We are very thrilled to be part of the alliance that unites the core competencies, experiences and strengths of these three complementary partners.”

“Together with the expertise of Suntech and youmex, our alliance is well-positioned to solidify a strong presence within the UK’s Solar PV market,” echoed Helmut Kube, Managing Director of Greenfield.

Gas in storage dropped in the week ended Mar 21 by 57 Bcf. Last year in the same week gas in storage was pretty much the same as the week before.

News on Household-Size (Small) Wind Turbines

April 7, 2014,   by Mike Barnard: Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) continue to get attention, press and R&D funding. Antagonists of mainstream wind generation continually point at them as if they were a superior technology. People perpetually re-invent them and believe that they have found something new and exciting. However, they are undeserving of any significant attention, are an inferior technology and definitely aren’t new. Outside of a couple of niches, they are more of a distraction from deployment of effective utility-scale, horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT) than anything else.

March 24, 2014,The world market for small wind has continued to grow: As of the end of 2012, a cumulative total of at least 806’000 small wind turbines were installed all over the world. This is an increase of 10 % compared with the previous year, when 730’000 units were registered.

began, having gotten their solar cars to Darwin only to be faced with the reality of not being able to compete. For others the strong wind gusts, dust storms, rolling spinifex and sheer distance proved too much.  Regardless of their placing, all teams had reason to celebrate their achievements and were given a rousing reception and their moment in the sun on the official finish line at Hindmarsh Square in Adelaide.  In the Challenger class, Onda Solare from Italy in their solar car Emilia 3,

made the 3020 kilometres under solar power for the first time crossing the finish line at 4.25 pm on Friday putting them into the top ten. In the Adventure Class, Team Antakari from Chile also made the distance under

full solar power crossing at 9.31am Saturday morning which put them in second place in their class.  With 22 countries competing in Australia for the event, the Challenge welcomed first timers: China, Sweden, Indonesia, and Colombia.

China’s entrant from the Beijing Institute of Technology, Sun Shuttle, was welcomed into Adelaide today, having recorded 1398 solar kilometres. Colombia’s Universidad EAFIT Empress Publicas de Medelin, in their solar car Primavera, recorded 2505 solar kilometres; The Jonkoping University team from Sweden in their solar car, Natural Magic Energy, struck difficulties in the windy conditions, despite their damaged car they managed to record 1301 solar kilometres; and the team from Indonesia’s Intitut Teknologi Sepuluh Surabaya in their solar car Sapu Angin Surya drove 748 kilometres under solar power.  Event Director Chris Selwood congratulated all the teams saying the spirit of competition is just as important as the result.  “This is a truly unique event that brings people from diverse backgrounds and cultures together across the Australian outback. I look forward to our final day tomorrow, with our first ever street parade from 2pm followed by the Awards Ceremony and the announcement of the inaugural Cruiser Class winner,” he said.

For Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, activities at Hindmarsh Square will include:

  1. 38 solar car teams from 22 countries
  2. Hire a free Adelaide City Bike
  3. Adelaide Clean Drive – free test drive – some of the latest lowest emission production cars through the city streets
  4. Feast on Fork on the Road, from 12noon Sunday
  5. The world’s first solar car street parade, from 2pm Sunday starting in Hindmarsh Square and travelling through the city streets to Edwards park.

PROVISIONAL RESULTS DAY 1 of World Solar Challenge 2013

Team Nuon from the Netherlands, in their solar car Nuna 7, took an early lead in the Challenger Class of the 2013 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge and at the end of day one are approximately 633 kilometres south of Darwin. Just 32 kilometres behind at the Dunmarra Control Stop there is one minute separating second placed Team Twente in ‘Red Engine’ also from the Netherlands

Today, I want to share with you a really cool design called SunBloc, submitted by the team Heliomet of the London Metropolitan University (UK). You will see the power of linking the digital creative process with the digital fabrication as the strength of this team and may very well be the future of architecture.  I liked the way this design had been referred to as the “eco-warrior in a fine Italian suit” by some that relies on traditional passive technique to present a very contemporary concept through advanced digital software. It is tailored to site’s specific needs, energy pattern, and context, relying on cross ventilation strategy and thermo-cooling.  If one can provide the latitude and longitude of the house/site, then the software package will output the cutting pattern for the timber and a house that will arrive on site….tailoring a building digitally to the particular context of the building, to its climate conditions, material available, etc.  Due to the introduction of the incentive policy Feed-In-Tariff in UK in 2011, it is introducing rapid change in adoption of solar power/PV in UK. The team is heavily into PR in three stages: social media, press, and sponsorship.

I’ve received some of your emails regarding questions/concerns in how to obtain funding to start a solar/renewable energy/energy efficiency small business.  Here are some info/links that may be of assistance to you:

Furthermore, there are also several other avenues for finance one may consider upon starting one’s own business:

  • Self-financing
  • Loans from family and friends (agreement in writing is highly recommended)
  • Private stock issue
  • Forming partnerships  (General Partnership: all partners are individually personally responsible for their debts and all partners has the power to manage the business; Limited Partnerships: only general partners have control over management, whereas limited partners are only responsible for the debts to the extent of their investment in the business and no influence in management of the business at all; Limited Liability Partnership: all partners have limited liability but all also have power to manage the business.)
  • Venture capital: supplied by the professional investors and given to new growing businesses with impressive business venture plans. Financing is done by third-party investors investing from the professionally managed fund (generated by managing the pooled money of others.)
  • Angel Investors: wealthy individuals lending his/her own personal funds to help set up a business and in return generally acquires ownership equity of the business. Now a days, multiple Angel Investors are forming Angel Groups or Angel Networks engaging them in financing small businesses to a greater extent (example:  Oprah’s The Angel Network.)
  • Bank loans, donations, grants and subsidies are also potential sources of finance for small businesses (as seen above in various links).
