Let It Shine:The 6,000-Year Story of Solar Energy by John Perlin (posted here with permission from John Perlin)

For the last post of 2013, I’ve reserved sharing the most special chance meeting of the year with you all.  It is either an event of kismet or a reflection of the fact that Solar Energy Age has truly arrived in mainstream! So much so that every corner one (at least is in the case for yours truly) turns toward, one would run into some one who is connected to the solar industry. Or perhaps I have simply become a magnet attracting all kinds of solar enthusiasts…take your pick.

It happened on the last day of the conference of SPI2013 (Solar Power International 2013) in Chicago. We (hubby Mike-my camera man and tech support, and I) stayed at the Palmer House (mind you, this is not the hotel where the conference was being held). We simply have a soft spot for those nostalgic hallway photos of stars from yesteryears and the beautiful architectural details  rarely found in most other hotels. As we were getting ready to leave the hotel to catch our flight back to Florida,  some one entered our elevator with a beaming smile on his face.   Interestingly enough, this person, Thomas Barr, from Jacksonville, FL,

Thomas Barr, General Manager of Oncology Matrics, a part of Altos Solutions, who also worked for solar back in the 70's

turned out to be in Chicago for a different conference,  actually worked in solar business back in the 70’s-80’s and now is working as a General manager in Oncology Metrics (a division of Altos Solutions, Inc.), providing information products and services for the oncology community to promote and measure quantitative improvement in clinical and business processes at the provider, practice and enterprise level.

In the few minutes of this chance meeting in the elevator, Mr. Barr highly recommended a wonderful book, A Golden Thread: 2500 Years of Solar Architecture and Technology by Ken Butti and John Perlin. I found out later that:

A Golden Thread by Ken Butti and John Perlin

Its author John Perlin

John Perlin, sole author of Let It Shine , co-author of A Golden Thread, now at University of CA-Santa Barbara, Physics Dept.

has also authored Let It Shine: The 6000-Year Story of Solar Energy (cover above) and From Space to Earth: The Story of Solar Electricity. As a matter of fact, I just purchased Let It Shine’s kindle version  right before starting the trip to Chicago for SPI2013.  So, what do you think: are these chains of coincidences… or am I simply a magnet for all things and people that are solar…or perhaps we have simply arrived at a time in human history when solar has finally become sufficiently mainstream…as now that America has more solar or wind-power jobs than it has coal or steel jobs. As investments are shifting dramatically from coal and nuclear to wind and solar, will renewables finally have sufficient political clout to fend off increasingly desperate attacks by its endangering rivals? Time will tell….

Until the fickle finger of fate and time will unfold their mysteries, I will continue relishing each and every one of these events presented along my journey of advocacy for solar energy.

Finally, I implore all of you solar enthusiasts out there to take a look at these two books.  I love how Amory B Lovins, cofounder and chief scientist of Rocky Mountain Institute of Old Snowmass, CO, puts it:

Switching at last to renewables will be one of the greatest transitions in the history of our species: inventing a new fire that finally makes us safe, secure, healthy, and durable.  Even if we need never again reinvent this renewable-energy wheel, we must understand where it came from. Let It Shine shows how today’s renewable revolution builds on the tenacious efforts of countless generations of innovators whose vision we may finally be privileged enough to bring to full flower.

Yes, this has definitely been a cumulative effort for many generations. If I or any of us has been able to make a dent in pushing the slope at the inflection point, it would have been a great privilege.  And let us hope that the Renewable/Solar Energy Age is finally ready to blossom, for the sake of all human kind.

~have a bright and sunny day~

Carrie Vanston Talks About Minitrends at World Future Society 2013

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

I’ve delayed posting this piece because I wanted to wait until after finishing reading the book that I am about to post, Minitrends. I met its co-author, Carrie Vanston, at the World Future Society 2013 Conference in Chicago, IL during the month of July.  Below: Ms. Vanston, with a pleasant and personable demeanor, sat down to chat about her book Minitrends and the Annual MiniTrends Conferences that may be of interest to many of our viewers/readers who are innovators, investors, and entrepreneurs of emerging technologies:

I’m glad Minitrends is in the top quarter of my reading pile (with a list of over 60 books). It turned out to be quite a gem, well deserving of the Pinnacle Book Achievement Best Business Book Award and several other book awards.  With 30 years of experience as a technology forecasting expert, Dr. Vanston teaches us how to scope out a systematic and doable discovery path through diverse sources containing clues about changes just  beginning to happen. In the book, minitrends are described as the innumerable ripples within the sea swells of established ideas, with some of these ripples destined to be the genesis of waves, or even tsunamis (such as modern computing).  The challenge lies in  finding the ripples (with tangible destiny) within the large body of established ideas and shape them into products or services. The book is divided into five parts:

Cover of the book, Minitrends, by John H. Vanston Ph.D. with Carrie Vanston

  1. The Value of Minitrends
  2. Uncovering Minitrends
  3. Some Attractive Minitrends
  4. Prospering From Minitrends
  5. Becoming a Minitrends Master

Ms. Vanston represents the company Technology Futures Inc. which provides quality custom studies and technology forecasts on key trends to a wide variety of commercial, government, and academic organizations. Through Technology Futures Inc., authors John H. Vanston Ph.D. and Carrie Vanston compiled valuable list of best practices in the book “Minitrends” to guide entrepreneurs and innovators to profit from their respective passions while making a significant impact in our world. Minitrends represent current small emerging trends (technical, social, economic, regulatory, demographic, etc.) that will become important within two to five years, not yet recognized but can be projected/forecasted, with value driven purpose. This book is a great source for ideas for new ventures and is currently available in printed and/or e-book format at amazon.com. To create opportunities for innovators to meet, Technology Future Inc. also hosted MiniTrends 2013 Conference (2nd Annual Conference) in Austin, TX, focused on the topic of The Integration of Profit & Social Responsibility. Upcoming Minitrends 2014 Conference will take place in Austin, TX during Fall of 2014. This conference  will be attended by visionaries and thought-leaders looking for opportunities not yet widely recognized. To find out more details about Minitrends 2014 Conference, please feel free to contact: (512) 258-8898, or Toll Free (800)TEK-FUTR or email info@tfi.com

If you are some one who is in search of innovative ideas, be it for individuals, small-, medium-, large- size companies, and want to become a master at developing  and/or prospering from such trends, the book “Minitrends” by John H. Vanston with Carrie Vanston may be purchased via amazon.com. If you are looking for events to interact with other innovators and thought-leaders interested in future of technologies, please feel free to go to: www.minitrends.com/contact to find out when and where the 3rd Annual MiniTrends Conference will be held.

Time For Collaboration! Sunny Day in FL (credit: sunisthefuture-Susan Sun Nunamaker)

(the letter below is inspired by one of the Kiva Zip businesses that is seeking help with marketing)

Greetings, Kiva Team,

Sunisthefuture Team at Kiva would like to propose a collaborative effort with small businesses at Kiva Zip:

Our goal here at Sun Is The Future is in speeding up the transition toward solar energy age via education and helping entrepreneurs to establish small businesses in solar energy/ renewable energy/energy efficiency/ recycling, and online store. Understanding that limited budget for marketing is a common theme for many small business owners, I’d like to call the attention to ways of reducing costs while receiving marketing and PR help for these small business owners:

Firstly, any small businesses at kiva.zip.org that has installed solar system and provided sunisthefuture.net with photos of their solar rooftop system and permission to post/promote will be recognized at sunisthefuture.net and will be promoted by Sun Is The Future at various social networks (Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Google+) 3 times for a period of a week. For those that (think) cannot afford the initial cost of installing solar systems, please view these posts:

  1. Clean Energy Is Made Easy With Solar City
  2. Go Solar! With Solar City, Solar Is Ready To Go Mainstream!
  3. Elon Musk, The Game Chanager & Risk Taker Who Sped Up Transition Toward Renewables
  4. Solar City Teaming Up With Tesla

Hopefully, they will have realized that Solar City will be able to install solar system (in states where Solar City exists) at their rooftops for free so that these small businesses would simply purchase their electricity through Solar City. These small businesses, once having installed solar systems through Solar City on their rooftops or via Community Solar Gardens in a community solar garden ,  will be able to receive promotion by Sun Is The Future at sunisthefuture.net and via social networks, as mentioned above, free of charge. Be sure to submit the photos of your solar system and a letter/email of permission for the use of your photos in order for Sun Is The Future to promote your business online.  Why do you want to be promoted by Sun Is The Future?  There are readers/viewers from over 164 countries here at Sun Is The Future.

For those of you who have been following Sun Is The Future closely, I trust that you remember our Renewable Energy friend Paul Gipe (who also believes in Feed-In-Tariff) from the Wind persuasion. I’d like to share with you, his correspondence updating us on the topic of Feed-In-Tariffs, below:

News on Feed-in Tariffs

November 24, 2013,   by Paul Gipe

I’d already marked up my version of Matthias Willenbacher’s book My Indecent Offer to the Chancellor in the faint hope of some day posting a review from the German—it’s difficult and time consuming and there’s always the risk that as a native English speaker I am missing something important or worse misinterpreting a passage. Yes, this is old news. Willenbacher’s proposed his offer to Chancellor Merkel mid-summer, well before the fall election. But Germany’s enegiewende remains in play and the [more]

Energy watchdog ANRE is in the final stages of deciding on feed-in tariffs for renewable projects in Romania, in a move which has been expected by investors. Zoltan Nagy-Bege, member in ANRE’s regulation board, said on Wednesday the European Commission (EC), the executive arm of the EU, sent the first approval letter this September on the computation mechanism drawn up by the ANRE. He added the watchdog is currently establishing the prices in the new system, which has to be vetted by the EC.

I’ve posted a model feed-in tariff bill for use by feed-in tariff advocates in the US. The bill is very basic and directs the state utility commission to determine nearly all the details. This bill was designed to meet Federal Energy Regulatory Commission requirements and was intended for use in the Indiana General Assembly. Model USA State Feed-in Tariff (Indiana 2013)[more]

IEA: FITs Not a Subsidy—But Tax Credits are IEA: Net-Metering only 2% of World Market–The International Energy Agency (IEA) has declared that feed-in tariffs are the principal driving force in the worldwide development of solar photovoltaics (solar PV). Renewable energy Feed-in Tariffs (REFIT) have been highly effective in many countries, and provide a proven example of a results-based climate finance instrument, if tuned carefully over time to be sustainable.

Update of Barefoot Power Loan to Gottlieb and Elephant Energy

Here is an update of Barefoot Power Loan to Gottlieb for those of you on Sunisthefuture Team at Kiva: Gottlieb and Elephant Energy (EE) used the Kiva loan to purchase 768 Firefly Mobile Lamps and 12 Firefly Fast Phone Chargers from Barefoot Power. Below is the update from Claire Markham in Namibia. I am also posting a video on Elephant Energy in Namibia (how EE got started and what EE is trying to do in Africa):

Gottlieb and Elephant Energy (EE) used the Kiva loan to purchase 768 Firefly Mobile Lamps and 12 Firefly Fast Phone Chargers from Barefoot Power. The solar products were introduced to the EE supply chain that operates throughout six Northern regions of Namibia and assisted in the expansion of EE’s efforts towards rural development, job creation and the availability of safe, alternative energy solutions.

The EE supply chain that the Barefoot Power solar products were sold through currently employs 34 Namibians, four of whom work as Regional Sales Managers (RSMs) and 30 who operate as Rural Sales Agents (RSAs). The RSAs are trained by the RSMs on marketing and sales techniques and then they are supplied with solar products that they sell and earn a commission. RSAs come from rural villages where sources of income are difficult to find. Selling solar products allows our sales agents to be proactive and earn an income based on how much they decide to work.

The solar lights purchased with the Kiva loan offer a safe alternative to candles and kerosene as they eliminate the risk of an accidental fire. Villagers who have bought these products are well aware of the risks associated with open flames in grass huts and they are relieved to have a safe alternative. The solar lights and cell phone chargers also offer economic benefits as they pay back their value in 1-3 months, allowing villagers to cut their dependence on fire for light and paying to charge their cellphones.

All of the profits from the sales of the Barefoot Power solar products will be reinvested into EE in the form of purchasing new products, capacity building and supply chain costs. The solar products have all been sold and the proceeds that have been generated will allow us to expand our supply chain and increase the impact of EE. We hope to continue with this momentum by introducing more solar lights and cellphone chargers to an underserved market that is in need of alternative energy sources.

Solar City Teaming Up With Tesla

Dear Friends, Visitors/Viewers/Readers,

In a recent report on Solar City teaming up with Tesla, Solar City will use Tesla’s batteries for energy storage. This fast-growing solar installer, Solar City, has found a solution to energy storage issue while reducing energy cost and demand cost. Called DemandLogic, it could allow businesses to use stored electricity in times of peak demand, reducing their usage at peak periods and the associated fees (called the demand charges). Below you will find a video of Solar City’s Lyndon Rive, discussing the transformative impact of Solar CIty:

Energy charges have risen rapidly (Source: EIA)-DemandLogic reduces your demand charges from day one. And because demand charges tend to rise, your savings increase over time (Source: http://www.solarcity.com/commercial/demandlogic/)

Lyndon Rive (cousin of Elon Musk, chairman of Solar City), Solar City’s chief executive, said that the systems would provide backup power and a working solar array during blackouts. Mr. Rive also added that he does not see the systems as a step toward independence from the grid, although storage is very important in maintaining grid stability as more customers continue to adopt solar.

Based on a $1.8 million grant in 2010 from the California Public Utilities Commission to study the possibilities of storing electricity from rooftop solar arrays in batteries, the product was developed. The company has also signed up approximately 300 of its residential customers for a pilot program using battery packs from Tesla (where Elon Musk, cousin of Lyndon Rive, is the chief executive of Tesla and chairman of the Solar City, as indicated in our post/video of Dec. 11, 2013). The company will offer its storage systems in parts of California, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

“It’s not a no-brainer-you still have to have the  right combinations of rates and demand charges and the cost of the equipment. But if the systems are able to take advantage of a 30% federal tax credit, the economics would have broader appeal.” according to a senior research analyst at Navigant Research.

The new customers at Solar City systems signing 10-year service agreements are eligible for the credit. The Solar City systems are made to store about a third of the energy the solar array can produce. Mr. Rive guarantees that there would be reductions of demand charge, at about 20%. Part of the appeal is that the system allows businesses to continue operating at full capacity, rather than reducing power usage, as in traditional demand response program.
